“Scotland Attracts Tourists Amidst European Heatwave: ‘I Don’t Even Drink Whisky’”

The year 2026 has proven challenging for the tourism sector, grappling with issues such as conflict, delays at EU borders, and economic and climate-related concerns that are impacting vacation plans. However, despite the decline in visitors from the Middle East and other regions affecting much of Britain, Scotland is experiencing a notable surge in tourism.

According to data from VisitBritain, Scotland has seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals, with a 15% rise in flight bookings to Scottish airports during June and July. This contrasts with a decline in bookings to London and other parts of England in recent months. The hotter weather affecting many European countries may have drawn more travelers to Scotland in search of cooler temperatures, though tourism officials suggest that the appeal of Highland warriors and kilted football fans plays a significant role as well.

Efforts to enhance direct flight connections from North America have successfully materialized over the past two years, strengthening the traditional influx of American tourists. Additionally, there has been an uptick in visitors from continental Europe, likely seeking respite from the heat, as well as an increase in domestic travelers opting to vacation within the UK to avoid the complications and delays associated with the EU entry-exit system.

In Edinburgh, traditionally the busiest month is August, and this week, Princes Street was bustling with tourists enjoying the lively atmosphere, including street performers and enthusiastic fringe festival promoters distributing flyers.

Marc Crothall, CEO of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, reported a 30% increase in festival ticket sales, stating, “Edinburgh is thriving, which is fantastic. This is a significant attraction for international visitors.”

Not all tourists in the city were aware of the ongoing festivities. Zanet Garcia from Mexico City, on her second day in Scotland, expressed her surprise at discovering the festival. “I was quite confused. I had never heard of the fringe before, but everyone has been so welcoming,” she remarked with a smile. Her interest in Scotland was sparked by Scottish mythology featured in popular books and TV shows like Harry Potter and Outlander, and she aimed to visit various related sites. She also planned to experience iconic attractions, having just toured the Johnnie Walker Experience, despite not being a whisky drinker, and was looking forward to the military tattoo event.

While most tourists are from the UK, it is the international visitors who tend to spend more and stay longer, enjoying a wide array of attractions and experiences. Data indicates that overseas tourists to Scotland spent an average of over £900 during a week in 2024, in stark contrast to the approximately £300 spent by British holidaymakers over a three-night stay.

Research from the Moffat Centre for travel and tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University reveals a notable increase in tourists opting for campervan travel rather than hotel accommodations this year. Despite the increase in visitor numbers, Crothall noted a decline in per capita spending, characterizing the overall situation as “healthy but not booming.”

He pointed out that British tourists are increasingly looking for free activities such as museum visits and countryside walks due to ongoing cost of living pressures. “Instead of indulging in a three-course meal, they are opting for a single course. Although the reduced VAT and free travel programs help, they are not a cure-all,” Crothall explained.

Although Scotland has faced its own climate challenges, including heatwaves and severe wildfires in the Cairngorms, it remains a cooler destination compared to southern regions of the UK. Crothall expressed optimism about the potential for increased European visitors due to climate factors.

Vicki Miller, CEO of VisitScotland, noted that while definitive data linking climate conditions to tourism trends is still pending, there has been strong interest from European countries, including Spain and Italy, which may be influenced by weather patterns.

Research indicates that a significant number of tourists, like Garcia, are inspired by film and television. Online interest surged following the success of the reality show The Traitors, although Ardross Castle, a filming location, is not open to the public. Similarly, castles featured in Outlander have become popular tourist sites.

Miller highlighted that approximately 36% to 37% of international visitors cite film and television as their motivation for traveling, noting that classic films like Braveheart and Local Hero continue to resonate with audiences.

Sports events have also attracted visitors, from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to major golf tournaments, along with the enthusiastic support of Scottish football fans. Interest from Germany has increased following Euro 2024, where the Tartan Army was recognized as the best supporters due to their friendly demeanor and charitable contributions, positioning them as excellent ambassadors for Scotland.

During this year’s World Cup, with Scotland participating in the US, VisitScotland took the opportunity to promote Scottish holidays, resulting in doubled online searches for trips to Scotland.

Scotland’s long-term strategic initiatives aim to capitalize on increased direct flight availability—adding 100,000 new seats annually from the US—and year-round tourism promotion. However, many are still feeling the effects of reduced spending amid ongoing economic challenges.

In Edinburgh, Dexter, a tour guide with Edinburgh Bus Tours, expressed his concerns about declining visitor numbers over his seven years in the role. “Tips have significantly decreased. I used to rely on them for vacations, but that’s no longer possible,” he shared. He noted that the recently introduced 5% tourist tax on accommodations in Edinburgh has compounded the issue, stating, “People simply do not have the money.”
