The journey in “Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy” unfolds in a landscape that feels both ancient and vibrant. The protagonist, Sophia, traverses the remnants of a bygone era, echoing the steps of a Minoan warrior from centuries past, suggesting a deep, mystical connection between them. This “resonance” is illustrated through shared actions, such as an ancient mechanism that remains functional in her medieval context. As the narrative progresses, it becomes evident that Sophia, driven by her extraordinary abilities, is largely guided by fate rather than her own choices.
This intriguing meta-narrative serves as a foundation for a game that, at its core, involves navigating Sophia through a series of linear pathways. Players maneuver her through intricately designed environments, which range from chaotic pirate hideouts to charming cobblestone streets in Venice. Much of the gameplay centers around the archaeological remnants of Crete, which conceal a dark and ominous secret. The experience aligns with classic third-person action-adventure genres, reminiscent of titles like “Tomb Raider” and further enhanced by games such as “The Last of Us.” Gameplay offers little surprise, as players will find themselves running, leaping, and swinging across precarious platforms, squeezing through narrow crevices, and hiding behind conveniently placed structures to evade foes.
Despite the familiar mechanics, the Bordeaux-based developer Asobo infuses a sense of magic into the experience. Sophia, a character introduced in the previous installment of the A Plague Tale series, leads this thrilling adventure with confidence. Raised by a wealthy mother and a smuggler father, she begins her journey as a young girl escaping a troubled past in a convent, before transitioning to her twenties, where she emerges as a skilled fighter in pursuit of hidden treasures within Crete’s expansive cave systems—legendary territory tied to the myth of the Minotaur.
In contrast to the somber atmosphere of recent cinematic adaptations like Christopher Nolan’s take on “Odyssey,” Asobo presents an initial depiction of Crete that resembles a picturesque travel brochure, featuring soft sandstone cliffs, swallows flitting through the golden light, and lush greenery entwined around ancient ruins. The vibrant colors of Minoan frescoes, rich oranges and vivid yellows, add to the visual appeal, showcasing their enduring brightness.
The game occasionally shifts to the classical era, allowing players to experience the world through the eyes of the warrior, immersing them in lively scenes filled with crowds clamoring for spectacle, elegantly draped fabrics, and flowers adorning mosaic floors.
However, as the narrative progresses, the tone gradually shifts to a darker atmosphere, while Asobo maintains its focus on light—a crucial element in the previous A Plague Tale titles, used to fend off swarms of rats. Sophia wields a sphere capable of reflecting and refracting light, essential for solving environmental puzzles that often involve manipulating oversized lenses. Yet, these puzzles, along with the platforming elements, lack complexity, offering only brief moments of reflection without the reward of significant “aha” discoveries. Players typically encounter straightforward solutions, adhering closely to the developers’ intended paths.
While stealth is an option, Sophia often finds herself engaged in direct combat. The most exhilarating encounters occur towards the game’s finale, where swirling light causes undead-like figures to crumble into dust, a spectacle heightened by Sophia’s skillful swordplay. These moments stand out as some of the most dynamic melee sequences in the game’s approximately 12-hour playtime, showcasing a captivating blend of movement and illumination.
Though Sophia’s adventure mirrors that of many treasure-seeking protagonists in the action-adventure genre, the game transcends its familiar design elements through its captivating visuals and well-crafted characters. “Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy” ultimately shines due to Sophia’s journey, as she confronts her historical ties and ultimately breaks free from them in a strikingly dramatic fashion.
The game is set to be released on August 27.
