On Saturday, the Surat Rural Police apprehended a 26-year-old individual, Saurabh Singh, along with a female companion, following allegations of abetting suicide and demands for dowry. This arrest came just days after the tragic death of his wife, who reportedly took her own life.

Saurabh Singh is the son of Sashi Sanjay Singh Rajput, a former vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s women’s division in Surat. The legal actions were initiated after a complaint was filed by the deceased’s brother against Saurabh and his female associate.

As reported by the Kadodara police, Saurabh’s wife, Nidhi Kumari, aged 24, allegedly died by suicide at their residence in Kadodara on Tuesday while other family members were absent. Upon returning home, Sashi Rajput discovered Nidhi’s body hanging in her bedroom and subsequently contacted her husband, Sanjay Singh, as well as the police.

A police team promptly arrived at the scene and transported the body to a hospital for a postmortem examination. During the examination, authorities discovered a suicide note written in Hindi among Nidhi’s belongings.

Nidhi’s brother, Aditya Kumar Singh, who resides in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, traveled to Surat upon learning of the incident and filed a complaint against his brother-in-law and the female companion.

In response to the complaint, the Kadodara police registered a case on Wednesday, charging the pair under sections BNS 108 (abetment of suicide) and 85 (harassment of a woman by her husband or relatives).

According to Kadodara police inspector V A Desai, the suicide note indicated that Nidhi Kumari had expressed concerns about “frequent arguments” with her husband regarding his “illicit relationship” with another woman. The investigation is ongoing.
