Germany has officially attributed a recent incident involving an explosive drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia. This accusation follows a thorough assessment of the technology used and other intelligence data, leading Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to conclude that Russia was responsible for the hybrid attack that occurred on August 4.
In retaliation, the German government plans to close Russia’s consulate in Bonn, the former capital, later this month, and will terminate the lease for the Russian House, a cultural institution located in Berlin. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul indicated that Germany would also recommend additional sanctions against Russian individuals within the framework of the European Union.
This assertion is the latest in a series of allegations against Moscow regarding hybrid attacks across Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed strong support for Germany, stating that the EU stands united against Russian aggression. She emphasized that the bloc is preparing to implement further sanctions against Russia.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the situation. He stated that NATO remains committed to bolstering its capabilities to deter and defend member nations against potential threats, including nefarious activities similar to those witnessed in Leipzig. Rutte declared that Russia’s efforts to intimidate and disrupt unity among allies supporting Ukraine would be ineffective.
Russia has faced numerous accusations of orchestrating hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure, including logistics centers and transportation hubs across Europe, with the intent of undermining support for Ukraine among its allies. The Kremlin has consistently denied any involvement in such incidents.
The drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a vital logistics center for military supplies and the German freight company DHL, involved the discovery of a drone filled with explosives near a parked Ukrainian aircraft. A bomb disposal robot was deployed to handle the drone, resulting in temporary flight disruptions at the airport. Subsequently, another drone, also containing traces of an explosive material, was reportedly found near the airport weeks later.
The timing of Germany’s accusations coincided with a meeting of European defense leaders aimed at enhancing security measures in response to an increasingly aggressive Russia. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, emphasized the need for Europe to invest in defense, asserting that increased spending alone does not guarantee success. She highlighted the urgency of addressing deficiencies in Europe’s conventional military capabilities within NATO.
Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, European nations have significantly increased their military budgets, amidst calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for European allies to enhance their defense spending as the United States shifts its focus toward other global challenges, notably China.
