Lionel Richie was admitted to a hospital over the weekend after performing in St. Louis, as reported by TMZ, marking another health-related issue for the renowned former Commodores frontman.
During his Saturday night performance at The Muny, video footage captured Richie leaning against a piano for support at one point. Audience members noted that the 77-year-old artist requested a chair for his concluding performance of “All Night Long.”
Following the concert, Richie opted to check into a nearby hospital for evaluations, which sources suggest may have been related to mild dehydration, according to TMZ.
This incident is not the first health scare for the Grammy-winning musician this year. In June, he had to sit down while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling” in Minnesota, attributing his need for a break to dizziness, ultimately leading to an early conclusion of the show and the postponement of subsequent performances in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio.
In July, he humorously mentioned the necessity of electrolytes during a concert at Madison Square Garden.
Richie is currently engaged in his “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour, which features 26 cities alongside Earth, Wind and Fire.
Considered one of the most influential pop songwriters of the late 20th century, Richie was part of the highly successful group the Commodores during the 1970s, delivering hits such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Brick House,” before embarking on a solo career in the early 1980s. His solo repertoire includes classic ballads like “Hello,” “My Love,” and “Say You, Say Me.”
In 1985, alongside Michael Jackson, he co-wrote the iconic charity single “We Are The World,” which played a significant role in raising funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Since 2018, he has also been a judge on the television show “American Idol.”
Richie has earned 33 Grammy nominations throughout his career, winning four, including the prestigious Album of the Year in 1985 for “Can’t Slow Down” and Song of the Year in 1986 for “We Are The World.”
