R Madhavan, the renowned actor, has frequently discussed his parenting philosophy and his encouragement of his son Vedaant Madhavan’s swimming aspirations. In a recent interview, Madhavan expressed that he has always regarded Vedaant as an equal, valuing his insights from an early age.
“I have treated Vedaant like an adult since he was quite young. I never indulged him excessively. Even when he was just five, I would seek his opinions on various matters. He has grown up understanding that his views are important to me. While children inevitably make mistakes, I hope Vedaant learns from mine. Each day presents new challenges in parenting today. I like to think of myself as a cool dad, though I’m not sure if my son sees it that way,” he shared during a discussion on The SS Podcast.
During the conversation, Madhavan also noted that Vedaant is quite candid in his critiques of his father’s films. “Vedaant is very straightforward when it comes to my movies. If he enjoys a film, he expresses his admiration openly. After watching Vikram Vedha, he embraced me warmly. Following Rocketry, he told me, ‘Dad, I’m really proud of you.’ He even watched Dhurandhar with his friends in the United States and found the trailer to be remarkable. I truly value his opinions,” he remarked.
This isn’t the first occasion Madhavan has mentioned his son. In a previous interview with Behindwoods TV, he acknowledged that while there are many talented swimmers in India, Vedaant receives more attention due to his father’s fame. “There are numerous swimmers in India who surpass Vedaant’s abilities. However, they don’t garner the same recognition because they aren’t my child. People often discuss him wherever I go because of our connection. I advised him, ‘Stardom can be perilous, my friend. You have it at a young age. Learn to manage it, as it can be fleeting, and ensure your mental well-being is not compromised,’” he said.
On the career front, R Madhavan was last featured in GDN, a biographical film about the inventor Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, which was released in theaters on August 7.
