Hair spas are frequently promoted as a solution for reviving dry, frizzy, or damaged hair, which makes them a favored choice among those seeking smoother and more manageable locks. However, when the issue at hand is hair loss, one must consider if these treatments provide more than just a temporary aesthetic enhancement.
On August 11, celebrity hairstylist Amit Thakur, known for his collaborations with Nita Ambani, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt, shared insights on the pros and cons of hair spas in an Instagram post. He characterized the treatment as a comprehensive process aimed at nourishing both the scalp and hair, stating, “A hair spa is a multi-step treatment that nourishes your scalp and your hair. Salons claim it helps with frizz, and while it can temporarily alleviate frizz issues, that’s just part of the picture.”

Thakur compared hair spas to other treatments like keratin and hair botox, indicating a preference for hair spas due to their non-invasive nature. He remarked, “I choose hair spas over treatments like keratin or botox because they do not change your hair’s structure.” Nonetheless, he pointed out that improving the condition and appearance of hair does not necessarily address the problem of hair loss.
Regarding hair loss, Thakur explained, “When it comes to hair fall, hair spas do not significantly influence it.” He mentioned that these treatments involve deep cleansing of the scalp, which can lead to healthier hair over time; however, he cautioned that they do not address the root causes of hair loss that individuals may be facing.
This distinction is crucial, as hair loss can stem from various underlying factors, and while a hair spa may enhance the texture or appearance of hair, it may not resolve the reasons behind the shedding. An expert outlines the realistic capabilities of hair spas, their limitations, and when continuous hair loss should be investigated further.
Dr. Swetha Sridhar, Medical Director at Dr. Swetha’s Skin Sutra Clinic, informed indianexpress.com that “A hair spa can enhance the condition and look of your hair, particularly by eliminating product buildup, enhancing moisture, and decreasing dryness and friction. However, it is vital to differentiate between hair quality and hair growth. A hair spa might lower breakage and create a smoother feel, but it does not address the majority of medical reasons for hair loss.”
Dr. Sridhar emphasized that conditions such as androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, or inflammatory scalp issues necessitate specialized medical treatment. While good scalp hygiene can contribute to overall scalp health, salon treatments should not be viewed as solutions for hair loss.
Hair breakage typically happens along the hair shaft, leading to noticeable shorter strands, split ends, rough texture, or increased frizz. Conversely, shedding involves the complete hair strand exiting the follicle, often accompanied by a small bulb, and may be observed as an increase in hair on pillows, combs, or during washing. Chronic shedding can arise from various causes, including nutrient deficiencies, thyroid issues, hormonal shifts, significant illness or fever, intense stress, rapid weight loss, and specific medications. Genetic hair loss is also prevalent and generally manifests as gradual thinning rather than sudden shedding, according to Dr. Sridhar.
Individuals may wonder when persistent hair loss should be assessed by a dermatologist. The correct response is: “B. When hair loss continues for several weeks, worsens progressively, or is accompanied by visible thinning, bald patches, or scalp symptoms.”
Dr. Sridhar advises that hair loss that persists for an extended period, worsens, or occurs alongside visible thinning, widening parts, bald spots, itching, scaling, or inflammation should prompt a visit to a dermatologist. The physician may evaluate the hair loss pattern and scalp condition, conduct a hair pull test or a dermoscopic examination, and suggest blood tests to check for factors such as iron levels, thyroid function, or nutritional deficiencies. Treatment options will depend on the identified cause and may involve correcting deficiencies or prescribing medications when necessary.
