The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has summoned Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the senior selection committee, and VVS Laxman, the head of the Centre of Excellence, to its Mumbai office on Thursday. The agenda for this meeting includes strategizing the future direction of Indian cricket and analyzing India’s recent defeats during tours in Ireland and England. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had previously indicated that the board would evaluate the team’s performance abroad following these losses, although the meeting was postponed for unspecified reasons.
The outcomes being assessed are concerning. India faced a 2-0 defeat in the two-match T20I series against Ireland in June, which concluded a streak of 16 consecutive series without a loss, stretching almost three years for the current T20 World Cup champions. The subsequent tour of England proved even more challenging, with India losing the five-match T20I series 4-0, including a significant 125-run loss in Nottingham. Although India managed to win the first ODI in Birmingham, they ultimately lost the ODI series 2-1, further compounding their struggles.
Looking ahead, India is scheduled to visit New Zealand later this year, and with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, the BCCI aims to ensure that all parties involved are on the same page. A critical area of discussion will be player injury management; the board and the Centre of Excellence have recently faced criticism concerning a series of player injuries before key tours. Reports indicate that many players have lost faith in the Centre of Excellence, highlighting a noticeable communication gap among players, the Centre, and the selection committee.
In at least one situation, the selection committee was not informed that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was unfit for an upcoming tour. Additionally, Washington Sundar has been ruled out, and Sai Sudharsan’s recovery took longer than anticipated. The upcoming meeting will also explore the impact of IPL workloads on player fitness, as team management has previously expressed concerns to the BCCI regarding the unavailability of fully fit players.
In the recent announcement of India’s T20I squad for the Afghanistan series, the fitness status of four players remains uncertain. Bumrah, Washington, Nitish Reddy, and Harshit Rana are scheduled for fitness evaluations on September 9. With the New Zealand series looming, the board will discuss strategies to maintain the fitness of its fast bowlers and measures to mitigate injury rates in the future.
The BCCI and team management will also review Hardik Pandya’s fitness and rehabilitation progress. The selection committee aims to have him available for the 2027 World Cup; however, he is currently limited to bowling only five or six overs in an ODI.
