The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive searches at various locations across seven states, including West Bengal, on Wednesday morning as part of an investigation into a fraudulent scheme linked to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). This scheme involved the illicit collection of fees from motorists through the issuance of counterfeit toll receipts.
A contingent of six ED officials, supported by central security personnel, targeted a property on Shakespeare Sarani in Kolkata, which is associated with a local businessman’s office, according to agency insiders.
Reports indicate that the ED is executing searches at 14 sites across West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, prompted by a complaint lodged in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Investigations have revealed allegations of corruption amounting to several crores of rupees occurring at toll plazas on national highways. Evidence suggests that money was illicitly collected through fake receipts and was subsequently removed from toll booths without proper documentation.
Investigators are currently examining the destination of the illegally obtained funds and identifying individuals involved in the fraudulent activities.
