The inclusion of four players marked with asterisks in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan indicates a significant narrative. Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana have all been selected, but their participation is contingent upon fitness assessments.

In previous instances, selectors have opted for players who were nearing recovery, but with four individuals still pending clearance, the situation surrounding India’s team for this home series is quite uncertain, especially given that other alternatives exist.

Among the listed players, Bumrah stands out most prominently. He has been sidelined since suffering a left knee injury during the second ODI against England in Cardiff last July. Washington also faced a hamstring issue during that same ODI series. Meanwhile, Reddy missed tours to the UK and Zimbabwe due to a quadriceps injury, and Rana has faced a series of injuries including a knee surgery that kept him out of the T20 World Cup and led to further complications during the UK tour.

On a more positive note, Varun Chakaravarthy has been reinstated in the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the T20I series in England in July, which had previously kept him off the Zimbabwe tour.

India is scheduled to face Afghanistan in Delhi on September 13, 15, and 17. Following this series, the team will head to Japan to defend their gold medal at the Asian Games, with the men’s cricket competition commencing on September 24. Thus, the T20I series against Afghanistan could serve as essential preparation for players expected to participate in the Asian Games.

There is also a recent precedent where players selected pending fitness clearance ultimately missed their series. Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan were both included in India’s squad for a two-Test series in Sri Lanka, but neither managed to recover in time for the tour.

This selection raises intriguing questions. It is sensible to prioritize the fitness of a seasoned player for a significant tournament. However, for a bilateral T20I series, India has several other options available.

One such alternative is Mayank Yadav, whose promising performance during the Zimbabwe tour in July saw him take five wickets across three matches, contributing to India’s 3-0 T20I series victory. His impressive bowling, including a standout 3/29 in the final T20I, showcased his speed and ability to challenge batsmen effectively.

For a young player whose career has been marred by injuries, participating in three international matches was an important milestone. The series in Zimbabwe provided Mayank with an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities and reaffirm his pace.

Facing Afghanistan could have been a crucial next step for him, offering additional matches to strengthen his position in the team. While Bumrah’s contributions to the squad are undeniable, the potential value brought by Washington, Nitish, and Harshit also warrants consideration. The selectors may have received optimistic updates regarding their recoveries, anticipating all four will be fit by September 13.

If they receive clearance to play, concerns will likely dissipate. However, as of now, four out of the 15 players selected are uncertain for participation. If doubts about their fitness persist, India could have utilized these matches to provide Mayank with further exposure. With other available players, one must question the decision to select four individuals whose fitness remains in question.

The remainder of the squad reflects a familiar lineup. Shreyas Iyer will be making his home debut as T20 captain, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi retains his position following an impressive performance in Zimbabwe, while Sanju Samson returns as one of the two wicketkeepers alongside Ishan Kishan. The squad is completed by Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, and Arshdeep Singh.
