Iran has declared its intention to seek retribution following an alleged missile attack on a wedding celebration that resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and injured numerous others.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, local time, as tensions between Iran and the United States resurfaced after a brief period of relative calm. Despite the tragedy, U.S. officials maintain that their strikes do not target civilians.
The Iranian government is accusing the U.S. of committing a “war crime” due to the fatalities at the wedding party, which included a child. Video footage depicting the aftermath—featuring destroyed decorations, discarded shoes, and scattered debris—spread rapidly across Iranian social media on Wednesday, illustrating how a joyous occasion was transformed into a scene of mourning in the coastal town of Kuhestak, situated along the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian representatives have drawn parallels between this incident and a previous attack on a girls’ school that claimed 160 lives during the conflict’s initial onset. The Iranian Red Crescent reported that the missile strike occurred shortly after the U.S. announced operations targeting the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
According to Iranian authorities, the wedding strike resulted in four fatalities, including a child, and left 68 others injured. Iranian Foreign Minister Esmaeil Baquaei condemned the attack on social media platform X, labeling it a “war crime” and asserting that Iran would respond decisively to such brutal actions. Ebrahim Azizi, the chair of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, echoed this sentiment, stating that “these crimes will not go unpunished.”
In the immediate aftermath of the strike, videos surfaced showing the chaotic scene at the wedding venue, with sounds of panic and distress as rescuers attempted to assist the injured. One clip featured colorful wedding decorations scattered on the ground alongside shoes left behind in the chaos. A bystander sarcastically commented on the presence of military boots, lamenting the transformation of a wedding into a funeral.
Another video showcased a state television reporter holding up what was purportedly a fragment of an American missile, asserting that it was responsible for turning a celebratory event into a tragedy. The U.S. military, however, did not clarify the specific targets in Kuhestak. In a statement, U.S. Central Command indicated that the strikes were part of a response to recent threats posed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards against commercial shipping and American personnel in the region, while firmly stating that the U.S. does not target civilians.
The ongoing conflict has persisted since February 28, when a surprise bombing campaign by the U.S. and Israel resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader. Although an April ceasefire temporarily halted intense bombardments, sporadic clashes have continued, particularly in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blockaded since the onset of hostilities.
In the Hormozgan province, officials reported significant damage to telecommunications infrastructure, with several towers impacted in the recent strikes, disrupting communication networks in the region. State television broadcast footage of a toppled communications tower, with twisted metal scattered across the street, and some Iranian outlets estimated it to be approximately 140 meters from the wedding venue.
On Wednesday morning, the Red Crescent released aerial footage showing a gaping hole in the roof of a building at the wedding site, surrounded by debris in nearby alleyways. In a separate video, the father of the bride, Ali Mallahi, described the incident as deeply tragic, expressing gratitude that the casualties were not more extensive.
Witness accounts captured the moment of the strike, with one man recounting that he was en route to the wedding when he heard fighter jets overhead. He described the explosion as exceedingly powerful, stating that debris struck him before he lost consciousness. “Many children and women were severely injured. These were ordinary people,” he lamented.
On social media, a woman adorned with henna and dressed in purple shared a video post following the attack, expressing her shock and fear. She thanked God for the safety of the bride, groom, and their immediate families, despite the tragic events that unfolded.
