Meta has revealed enhancements to the privacy features of its AI-powered glasses following concerns that users were surreptitiously recording individuals without their permission.

The glasses are equipped with an LED indicator that illuminates when recording is in progress. Meta announced that it has recently made modifications to disable the cameras if there is any physical interference with the LED light. Previously, the recording function could be locked only by obstructing the light before filming commenced. Now, according to Meta, if a user covers the light after initiating recording, the recording will be halted.

In an email to CBS News, Meta stated, “These enhancements are already proving effective in deterring misuse—businesses that previously provided LED tampering solutions have ceased operations due to the camera’s automatic deactivation upon detecting interference.”

In August, CBS News reported on an incident in which a woman found a video of herself on social media, taken by a man wearing the glasses without her knowledge or consent. She expressed her frustration, stating, “I had no say.”

Last month, Anna Schecter, a senior producer at CBS News focused on crime and public safety, tested the glasses and noted that an earlier version of the disabling feature failed when she covered the LED light after filming had begun.

Meta has asserted that the updated security feature now effectively shuts down the recording function if any tampering occurs. “We will continue to implement updates like these to ensure that the capture LED reliably informs bystanders when images or videos are being recorded,” remarked Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of wearables, in a recent social media update. “Only a small fraction of individuals attempt to bypass these safeguards, and their need to resort to such measures indicates that our initiatives are succeeding.”

Additionally, Meta has launched a new educational campaign aimed at raising awareness about the glasses’ functionality. The company emphasized that the LED light is designed to notify others when the device is capturing images or videos.

To further address privacy issues surrounding its AI glasses, Meta has taken several actions, including eliminating online posts that offer tampering instructions, removing thousands of posts related to harassment connected to pickup artists and prank content, and blocking specific search terms and hashtags associated with such infringing material.
