The second official trailer for HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” has been unveiled.
Featuring newcomer Dominic McLaughlin in the titular role, this latest trailer offers a more in-depth look at life at Hogwarts and the various challenges that Harry Potter and his friends encounter during their inaugural year.
The fresh footage showcases several iconic scenes from the novel, highlighting Harry donning the invisibility cloak, participating in a game of Quidditch, and facing off against Professor Snape.
This trailer follows an initial teaser released in March, which provided the first glimpse of the new eight-episode series inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original work.
Alongside McLaughlin as Harry, the cast includes British newcomers Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton, who portray Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively. These young talents were selected after an extensive casting process involving British child actors aged nine to eleven.
The series also features notable actors such as Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.
Other cast members include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
The high-budget production of the series commenced in Hertfordshire, England, last July. It is helmed by “Succession” veterans Francesca Gardiner as the writer and Mark Mylod as the director, who will also direct several episodes.
Last month, Nicholas Hoult withdrew from a previously announced role in the show’s second season due to backlash regarding J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Kit Harington, known for “Game of Thrones,” has been announced as his replacement for the character Gilderoy Lockhart, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.
Previously, Lithgow expressed his views on Rowling’s stance, calling it “ironic and inexplicable.” He stated, “It upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to me having anything to do with this. But in Potter canon, you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. [Rowling] has written this meditation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.”
Powley also weighed in on the matter, saying, “I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender. I think that the trans community deserves safety, dignity, respect, and total acceptance.”
Rowling is serving in an advisory role as an executive producer for the HBO series.
The show is set to premiere during the Christmas season, with plans to adapt each subsequent book into future seasons.
