Relationships often exist in a nuanced space rather than a clear-cut dichotomy, where love, expectations, and emotional give-and-take converge. In a recent interview with SMTV, actress Shehnaaz Gill shared her thoughts on this intricate dynamic, revealing, “I have [betrayed someone]. In love. Not otherwise.”
Shehnaaz clarified that her choices were not born from impulse but stemmed from a sense of emotional unfulfillment. “I acted on it because there was a disconnect. When you have certain expectations from a partner and they fail to meet them… I hold those expectations. I can’t be the only one contributing. I believe in reciprocity. So when these situations arise, I choose to end things, as investing heavily in someone who doesn’t reciprocate is ultimately a waste of time.”
Further, Shehnaaz detailed the qualities she seeks in a partner: “I desire someone who is understanding, open-minded, and self-sufficient. They should respect my need for space. We should be able to share our work, appreciate each other’s efforts, engage in meaningful conversations without the distraction of phones, and enjoy traveling together.” She underscored the importance of mutual affection, stating, “A woman wishes to be loved in return for her love. If someone is unable to reciprocate, what’s the purpose?”
In addition to love, Shehnaaz addressed the significance of financial independence in contemporary relationships. “In all my past relationships, I have believed in sharing expenses. For instance, if we are on vacation, I prefer splitting the costs evenly.” She pointed out a common reaction among men, saying, “Some men seem to have an issue with this. They often think, ‘Why should your money matter? I can just use mine.’ I question why that is. Could it be insecurity regarding a woman’s ability to support herself? I have strong opinions on these matters.”
Sonal Khangarot, a licensed rehabilitation counselor and psychotherapist from The Answer Room, commented to indianexpress.com, “When individuals feel emotionally neglected or let down, it is essential to determine whether this arises from a genuine mismatch or a recurring pattern of unmet emotional needs. A natural mismatch may highlight differences in communication styles or love languages, which, while not inherently wrong, could necessitate adjustments. Conversely, a recurring pattern may indicate ongoing feelings of being overlooked or overextending oneself—signs that deeper emotional wounds or unfulfilled needs might be at play.”
When feelings of neglect linger despite sincere efforts, it may signal unmet requirements for safety, validation, or connection. “These issues can be explored with a reliable confidant or in therapy, where effective communication techniques and emotional understanding can promote healthier relationship dynamics,” Khangarot added.
Emotional reciprocity in relationships hinges on awareness, boundaries, and shared empathy. It involves the exchange of emotional support while maintaining one’s individuality and not relying solely on a partner for emotional stability. Achieving this balance necessitates clear expression of needs, active listening without defensiveness, and practicing self-soothing instead of constantly seeking reassurance, according to the expert.
The evolving financial landscape, where women increasingly cherish independence and shared responsibilities, can challenge traditional masculinity and power structures within relationships. Some men may feel threatened or inadequate, while women might grapple with feelings of guilt or the pressure to excel in every area.
“These changes can lead to tension if left unaddressed. Successfully navigating them requires open discussions about finances, mutual respect for each other’s contributions, and redefining partnership as a collaborative effort rather than a competitive one. When couples view financial matters as a shared objective rather than a measure of personal worth, they cultivate equality, minimize ego-driven conflicts, and establish a relationship founded on trust and mutual respect,” Khangarot concluded.
