According to official statistics, Sri Lanka experienced a decline of 3.3 percent in visitor arrivals in August 2026 compared to the same month the previous year. The total number of visitors for August reached 191,704, a decrease from 196,845 recorded in August 2025.

India remained the largest source of tourists, contributing 47,253 visitors, which accounted for approximately 25 percent of all arrivals. The United Kingdom followed with 19,588 visitors, while China provided 12,321 visitors.

Throughout the current year, Sri Lanka has welcomed a total of 1,535,122 visitors. Recently, the head of the Tourism Promotion Bureau announced a revision of the country’s tourism targets, adjusting the visitor goal for 2026 from 3 million to 2.7 million. Additionally, the revenue forecast from tourism was lowered from 5 billion dollars to 4.2 billion dollars.

In July 2026, tourist arrivals had already shown a year-on-year decrease of 1.7 percent, as reported by the central bank. The total number of visitors from January to July 2026 stood at 1,343,418, compared to 1,368,288 during the same period in 2025.

Tourism revenue for July 2026 was estimated at 286 million dollars, reflecting a 10.3 percent drop from the previous year. Cumulatively, tourism earnings from January to July 2026 fell by 11.5 percent, totaling 1.8 billion dollars compared to the same time frame in 2025.

Moreover, Sri Lanka lost the rights to host the Women’s Champions Trophy in February 2027, an event that could have boosted visitor numbers. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made the decision to relocate the tournament due to concerns regarding government interference in the governance of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
