Investigations are underway in Tucson, Arizona, regarding a shooting that occurred outside a gay bar and resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with authorities examining the case as a potential hate crime.
The incident took place shortly after midnight on Monday in the parking lot of Venture-N, as reported by Tucson police. The alleged shooter, identified as 44-year-old Ousman Ceesay, reportedly fatally shot 42-year-old Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and 33-year-old Cameron Davis Capara.
Police indicated that Ceesay sustained gunshot injuries himself and later succumbed to his wounds at a nearby hospital.
In a statement, the Tucson police noted, “Preliminary evidence indicates that the suspect approached the victims in the parking lot of the establishment. Following this confrontation, Mr. Siqueiros and Mr. Capara were shot. There is currently no threat to public safety. The suspect was found with a note listing various LGBTQIA+ businesses.”
Furthermore, the Tucson police department is treating this incident as a hate crime, and the investigation is ongoing.
Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto expressed concern in a statement, saying, “We understand that this event may instill fear and sorrow within our community. Tucson has always been a diverse city where people from various backgrounds, identities, and experiences coexist. We are dedicated to ensuring that every community member feels safe, respected, and included.”
Peter Loya, a Tucson resident and regular at Venture-N, spoke with the Tucson Sentinel about his long-standing friendship with Siqueiros, noting that he had known him for around 20 years, while Capara was a more recent acquaintance.
Loya characterized Siqueiros as a caring and thoughtful individual, always striving to see the good in others and bringing joy to those around him.
Drew Fellows, a friend of Capara, referred to him as a “revolutionary” photographer who maintained a strong focus on community well-being. “He consistently advocated for a brighter future for himself, his community, and everyone,” said Fellows to the Tucson Sentinel.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero condemned the shooting as “a direct and devastating attack on our LGBTQ+ community, yet another senseless act of gun violence.”
In June 2016, a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, resulted in 49 deaths and 58 injuries, marking it as the second-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
A study published in 2020 in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances revealed that LGBTQ+ individuals in the United States are 2.7 times more likely to fall victim to violent crime compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts.
