The devastating flash floods in Nepal have resulted in over 1,000 fatalities, prompting urgent rescue operations aimed at locating workers who may be trapped within hydropower project tunnels. Among nearly 4,000 individuals reported missing, around 900 are believed to be hydropower employees, with approximately 500 thought to be stuck in tunnels across 12 different sites, according to the Associated Press.

In Kathmandu, local authorities have begun interring numerous bodies in several trenches. The country’s disaster management agency has confirmed a total of 1,003 deaths linked to the floods, while 3,916 individuals remain unaccounted for, including 583 foreign nationals. To assist in identifying the deceased, a specialized forensics team consisting of 19 members from India has arrived in Kathmandu to analyze DNA samples.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has reported that 163 of its citizens have been successfully rescued from Nepal, as India continues to extend its relief and rescue operations in collaboration with local authorities. Moreover, a dedicated tunnel rescue team from India has been deployed to support the ongoing efforts in Nepal.
