Just five days shy of her one-year anniversary in international cricket, N Sree Charani achieved the remarkable feat of being named the top-ranked T20I bowler in women’s cricket on June 23. This notable accomplishment was propelled by her outstanding performance during this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup. Despite India’s inability to progress beyond the group stage in England, Charani emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 14 dismissals.
Since making her T20I debut in April of the previous year, the left-arm spinner has claimed a total of 44 wickets in T20I matches, making her the highest wicket-taker among bowlers from Test-playing nations. Following another strong performance in the opening match of the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup against Thailand, where she secured two wickets for just 10 runs, Charani received commendations from the team’s bowling coach, Aavishkar Salvi, who noted her significant impact since joining the Indian team.
“Sree Charani is an extraordinary talent. From the moment she entered the Indian women’s cricket team, she has made a strong impression. A year later, her ranking reflects that progress. She places great emphasis on her fundamentals during practice,” Salvi remarked to the media on Wednesday, ahead of India’s next match against Hong Kong.
Salvi also highlighted Charani’s eagerness to learn, stating that she actively seeks out various situations in practice to enhance her bowling skills. “She is committed to learning something new every day. If you observe her practice sessions, you’ll notice that each time she comes to the nets, she challenges herself with different scenarios, allowing her to express herself fully,” he added.
Although India, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, started their title campaign with an impressive 94-run victory over Thailand, there were concerns following a mid-innings slump where they lost eight wickets for just 46 runs. However, Salvi remained unconcerned, explaining, “That’s part of the game. In T20 cricket, there will be instances where our execution may not align with our plans. There will be times when we don’t perform as well as we aim to.”
India’s next match against Hong Kong is set to commence at 8 PM and will be broadcasted on the Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV.
