The Australian share market is poised for a positive start today, building on the momentum from Wall Street’s strong performance. As of the latest updates, major indices in the United States experienced gains: the Dow Jones climbed by 0.6% to 53,062 points, the S&P 500 rose by 0.5% to 7,667 points, and the Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.2% to 92,143 points. Conversely, European markets faced slight declines, with the FTSE down 0.3%, the DAX falling 0.5%, and the Stoxx 600 decreasing by 0.2%.
In commodities, gold prices saw an uptick, rising by 1.3% to $4,386 per ounce. Oil prices also increased by 0.7%, reaching $95.32 per barrel, while iron ore experienced a decline of 1.6%, trading at $97.80 per tonne. These figures reflect the market conditions as of approximately 7:20 AM AEST.
After a challenging day for many markets yesterday, the overnight session brought a welcome recovery. In particular, the Dow Jones and S&P 500 saw all sectors finish in positive territory, with the exception of Real Estate in the S&P 500. Among the notable movements, Dell Technologies Inc and Honeywell International were highlighted as bottom movers in their respective indices.
In Australia, the local currency weakened following the release of the June quarter GDP data, which also contributed to a downturn in the local share market.
