Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming by-election for Holborn and St Pancras, a contest prompted by Keir Starmer’s resignation from Parliament.
In a reflection on the current state of affairs, Polanski remarked that concerns over small boats crossing the English Channel today pale in comparison to the widespread anxiety experienced by the British public during the Norman invasion in 1066. This historical context was echoed by Andy Burnham, who joined French President Emmanuel Macron at the British Museum last night to honor the Bayeux Tapestry, which he referred to as a “remarkable symbol” of the longstanding friendship between France and the UK, as noted in King Charles’s speech.
This morning, Burnham is set to host Macron for discussions at Downing Street, with the issue of small boat crossings prominently on the agenda. As reported by Rajeev Syal, Downing Street has confirmed an increase in police presence along the French coast to combat the launch of what are termed “mega dinghies.” Syal noted that, despite a decrease in the overall number of crossings this summer compared to previous years, smugglers are adapting by using larger vessels to accommodate more individuals, with launches occurring as far as 150 miles southwest of Calais.
To address this trend, the UK government has announced a deployment of a surge team comprising 45 officers to French western beaches in the upcoming weeks, effectively tripling the resources in that area. Additionally, a specialized French intelligence and judicial unit focused on dismantling smuggling operations has expanded from 18 to 30 personnel. A new unit of 75 officers dedicated to reducing crossings has commenced operations in northern France, bringing the total number of law enforcement officers involved in this effort to nearly 1,050.
Home Office officials have indicated that the use of 15-meter boats capable of carrying 230 individuals has risen due to the effectiveness of stringent measures implemented by French authorities, financed by the UK. A recent report from the BBC highlighted that people smugglers are now collaborating and utilizing larger boats, with the cost for a journey across the Channel having increased from €1,300 to €1,700 (£1,120 to £1,460) over the past year.
Critics argue that both the UK and French governments need to enhance their efforts in addressing this issue.
