Brisbane Lions head coach Chris Fagan has criticized North Melbourne’s comments regarding the dismissal of Alastair Clarkson as “unjust.” Clarkson, who was ousted with one year left on his contract, faced harsh criticism from North Melbourne president Sonja Hood and football operations chief Todd Viney, who dissected his coaching strategies.
The Kangaroos are poised to commence their search for a new head coach next week following Clarkson’s departure. Fagan expressed his disbelief at the manner of Clarkson’s dismissal, emphasizing that his long-time friend deserved an opportunity to respond to any feedback before being let go.
Clarkson, who previously led Hawthorn to four premiership victories from 2005 to 2021, joined North Melbourne amid significant excitement in August 2022. However, his tenure came to an abrupt end yesterday, as Viney and Hood announced his dismissal.
When discussing the characteristics of the next head coach, Hood stated that the Kangaroos require someone adept in modern coaching methods. She reiterated that Clarkson’s hiring was not a mistake and stressed the need for a coach who aligns well with the club’s vision.
Viney added that there were still significant deficiencies in the team’s game plan and that Clarkson’s attempts to address these issues resulted in increased confusion among the players rather than clarity. He noted that feedback from within the club indicated that Clarkson had lost the confidence of key individuals in his ability to lead the team forward.
Fagan, who has known Clarkson since their time together at Melbourne in the late 1990s and later collaborated at Hawthorn, expressed concern for his friend’s well-being. He remarked, “I hope he’s alright,” and emphasized the importance of providing constructive feedback directly to Clarkson throughout the season, rather than during the press conference that followed his dismissal.
Fagan described the press conference as intense and felt it painted an unfair picture of Clarkson, who has contributed significantly to the sport. Despite North Melbourne’s notable improvement in the 2026 season, finishing 14th with nine victories, Fagan was surprised by the decision to part ways with such an accomplished coach.
“I was taken aback. I thought, ‘This can’t be accurate,’” Fagan recounted, highlighting how Clarkson’s leadership had positively impacted the team’s performance. He reflected on the harsh realities of coaching, noting how someone as successful as Clarkson could be dismissed so swiftly.
The two men were also involved in Hawthorn’s racism controversy, which concluded after two years of legal disputes in 2024. Clarkson took a mental health break in 2023, while Fagan, who is guiding the Brisbane Lions toward a potential third consecutive championship, admitted he had considered stepping back as well but ultimately chose to continue coaching.
Fagan, who has yet to communicate with Clarkson since the news, hopes his friend will remain engaged in the sport and humorously entertained the idea of Clarkson taking on a media role, given their history of tension with the press. “We have a long history and will continue to be friends, discussing football and seeking his counsel,” Fagan concluded.
