Next week, India will embark on a distinctive ‘away’ series at home, with Afghanistan hosting three T20 International matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
As they prepare to defend their gold medal at the Asian Games later this month, the senior selection committee has announced a robust T20I squad, captained by Shreyas Iyer. This announcement also marks the return of wicket-keeper Sanju Samson, who was omitted from the squad during India’s recent tour of Zimbabwe following defeats in two series against Ireland and England in July.
Samson’s reinstatement raises questions about India’s preferred opening partnership, especially given the team’s experimentation with various opening combinations in recent tours. He had been briefly sidelined during the England series, which resulted in the debut of young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi alongside Abhishek Sharma. Despite Sooryavanshi’s lackluster scores of 14, 13, and 15 in his initial three matches, he made a notable comeback during the Zimbabwe tour, where he was the top run-scorer, achieving two half-centuries, including a remarkable 81 off 49 balls.
Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta anticipates that India will likely stick with the successful pairing of Samson and Abhishek for the upcoming series against Afghanistan. He noted, “Reflecting on the last match against England, the combination was Sanju and Abhishek. Setting aside the Zimbabwe series, when all players were available, Sanju and Abhishek played together. We have yet to see the Sanju-Vaibhav combination. So far, we’ve observed Abhishek with both Vaibhav and Sanju. It might be worthwhile to explore what kind of partnership Sanju and Vaibhav could forge.”
Dasgupta further clarified his stance, emphasizing that he is not advocating for anyone to be dropped. “The aim is to provide every combination and individual with adequate opportunities and game time to evaluate what functions best before the World Cup,” he added.
Currently, India holds the top position in the T20I rankings, and Dasgupta expressed that the team will implement numerous changes throughout the upcoming series as they prepare for the World Cup scheduled for 2028. “In T20 cricket, over the next six to eight months, there will be rotations among 20 to 25 players. Some will return while others may be excluded. However, the focus is on forming a cohesive team a few months prior to a tournament like the World Cup,” he remarked.
