The first significant heatwave of an unprecedented summer hit on May 23, prompting a strong reaction from GB News presenter Cristo Foufas. He expressed his frustration with critics who claimed that extreme heat would lead to widespread fatalities, stating, “I’m tired of the doomsayers suggesting that we all face death and that we need to issue heat alerts. Just stay hydrated and perhaps limit the rosé while enjoying the sunshine.”
In response, co-host Renée Hoenderkamp, a medical professional, remarked, “We used to refer to that as Darwinism.”
As the intense heatwave, noted as the most severe in Europe, progressed into late June, the commentary remained dismissive. Will Kingston, another GB News presenter, pointed out that people die annually from accidents involving vending machines and falling coconuts, adding, “While unfortunate, such incidents are part of life, and we shouldn’t feel compelled to drastically alter our lifestyles in response.”
Similarly, on TalkTV, another British streaming news channel, the hosts displayed minimal concern while the country faced extreme temperatures. Julia Hartley-Brewer, speaking on June 24, conveyed her sympathy for those affected by the heat, but argued it should not lead to restrictions on flying or meat consumption, referring to policies that were not under consideration. Her guest, conservative commentator Benedict Spence, concurred, stating, “At some point, something will get you.”
As the heatwave peaked, TalkTV’s Kevin O’Sullivan criticized the exaggerated climate anxiety, stating, “The panic surrounding climate change due to a few warm days is absurd. We can enjoy a nice day without labeling it as a death threat.”
However, a report released on July 13 revealed that the heatwaves in May and June had resulted in approximately 2,700 premature deaths in England and Wales, based on historical data correlating heat with mortality. This finding prompted a defensive reaction from O’Sullivan, who dismissed the report as “disgraceful climate change scaremongering” and “absolute nonsense.”
Kingston echoed this sentiment, remarking that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the unreliability of predictive modeling, often driven by ideological biases.
As the situation progressed, the UK Health Security Agency reported on July 30 that the death toll had risen to 2,877, based on actual recorded fatalities from the May and June heatwaves. Many of these deaths occurred among elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions, a fact that some commentators, like Ross Clark on TalkTV, seemed to downplay, suggesting these individuals were already nearing the end of their lives.
Presenters from both channels frequently cited higher winter mortality rates as a point of comparison, without addressing why an increase in summer heat-related deaths should be considered acceptable even if winter deaths decline due to climate change. Current statistics from the Office of National Statistics indicate that in 2025, there were 2,805 heat-related deaths compared to 2,244 cold-related deaths, contradicting previous claims.
In a controversial statement, TalkTV presenter André Walker accused Ed Miliband, the former energy secretary, of being responsible for numerous deaths due to his environmental policies, without providing any supporting evidence for this claim.
Despite the obvious realities of rising temperatures, some commentators continued to deny the existence of climate change. GB News presenter Nana Akua labeled the climate crisis a “scam,” while Hoenderkamp attributed extreme weather to the sun itself, a notion steeped in outdated beliefs. Fashion designer Jeff Banks erroneously claimed that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have been declining for 150 million years. On TalkTV, Hartley-Brewer casually stated, “We’ve always experienced unusual weather,” despite overwhelming scientific evidence suggesting otherwise.
A fact check reveals that global climate scientists, backed by 192 national governments, have consistently affirmed that human activities have caused 100% of the global warming observed since 1950. Each heatwave is intensified and made more likely by fossil fuel emissions, with recent reports indicating that global warming is responsible for one death every minute worldwide.
Returning to the television discussions, while the heat impacting the UK was undeniable, the presenters turned their ire toward weather forecasting. TalkTV host Ash Gould suggested that the color-coded weather maps had been manipulated to incite fear, labeling it a “psyops operation,” although no evidence was provided to support this claim.
Another TalkTV host, Alex Armstrong, expressed outrage over the weather maps, arguing that they exaggerated the severity of the situation by depicting the country in extreme colors, without clarifying which maps he referred to or showing them to the audience.
One contentious topic among the TV discussions was air conditioning, which had become increasingly necessary as climate change raised temperatures in the UK. Foufas stated on GB News, “Here in the UK, we never really needed air conditioning until these climate issues arose.”
