Hampshire Cricket made a last-minute decision to withdraw New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn from their lineup just an hour before he was slated to make his debut for the club. This action followed considerable feedback from fans and staff regarding his inclusion.
Scott Kuggeleijn, who was acquitted of a rape charge in 2017, has represented New Zealand in 23 matches across various formats. He was included in a social media announcement as part of the 15-man squad preparing to face Warwickshire in a County Championship match, despite the club not previously announcing his signing on their official channels.
The announcement of Kuggeleijn’s involvement sparked significant criticism from the club’s supporters and some staff members, with social media posts labeling the decision as “disgraceful” and “shameful.” In response to the backlash, Hampshire Cricket released a statement affirming that Kuggeleijn would no longer play for the team, highlighting their commitment to listening to their fanbase and expressing gratitude to those who voiced their opinions.
Kuggeleijn was brought on board for the final four games of Hampshire’s County Championship season to replace South African Delano Potgieter, who was called up for a series against Bangladesh. The New Zealand player faced a rape charge in 2015, which resulted in a hung jury in the first trial, leading to his acquittal two years later. Following his acquittal, he made his international debut in an ODI series against Ireland in Dublin.
His selection for the squad also drew criticism in New Zealand, prompting former coach Gary Stead to defend the decision at the time. Throughout his international career, Kuggeleijn has participated in three Test matches, two One Day Internationals, and 18 T20 matches for the Black Caps. His last appearance for New Zealand was during a Test against Australia in March 2024, which ended in a three-wicket defeat for his team.
Before joining Hampshire, Kuggeleijn played for the Kingsmen in a T20 league in Darwin and is a regular participant in first-class cricket for Northern Districts in New Zealand.
