The highly anticipated Jayadeva-Kalena Agrahara segment of the Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line is set to launch this month, as confirmed by Karnataka’s Greater Bengaluru Development Minister, Krishna Byre Gowda, during a statement on Wednesday. The final phases of testing and trial operations are nearing completion.
On Wednesday, Gowda, along with Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and other officials, took a ride on the new Metro line.
Once this new section is operational, it will mark the expansion of Bengaluru’s Metro network beyond 100 kilometers. Currently, Namma Metro spans a total of 96 kilometers, which includes 43.5 kilometers of the Purple Line, 33.5 kilometers of the Green Line, and 19.2 kilometers of the Yellow Line.
The Pink Line, which measures 21.25 kilometers, will link Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, featuring 13.76 kilometers of underground routes and 7.5 kilometers elevated. It will consist of 18 stations, enhancing access to significant areas such as MG Road, Pottery Town, IIM Bangalore, JP Nagar 4th Phase, and Hulimavu.
The initial phase of 7.5 kilometers is designed to serve six stations, starting from Kalena Agrahara and passing through Hulimavu, IIM Bangalore, and JP Nagar 4th Phase, ultimately reaching Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. The Jayadeva Hospital station will also serve as an interchange with the Yellow Line.
Gowda mentioned, “The Pink Line from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere is ready for inauguration. We are awaiting a date from the Government of India for the official opening. We are optimistic about receiving this date within September.”
He further noted that there are enough trains available to initiate operations on this segment. These trains are currently undergoing necessary testing and trial runs, which include a mandatory 750-kilometer test run before they can be put into passenger service. The train operators have been selected and are expected to finish their required training by the end of this week, as stated by Gowda following the inspection.
While the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has completed all necessary preparations for the opening of this stretch, it is still awaiting approval from the Railway Board for the new rolling stock.
Following this, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety will carry out an essential safety inspection. The stretch will be accessible for public use once all requisite approvals and safety clearances are obtained.
