Renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has two offspring, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, from his previous marriage to Honey Irani. In a recent discussion, he reflected on how their children were raised and attributed the majority of the credit to Honey. Javed also shared insights into the professional accomplishments of Farhan and Zoya.
‘Farhan and Zoya have succeeded entirely on their own’
While discussing his children, Javed expressed, “I take pride in them not merely for their success, but because they have reached this point independently. Their achievements are not a result of parental influence. They have forged their own paths.”
He elaborated, “Honestly, I cannot claim any significant role in their triumphs. However, what brings me joy is that they have attained success through commendable efforts. They have not pursued fame, wealth, or recognition at any cost. Their projects are not crude or vulgar; they maintain their dignity, which is reflected in their work. That truly makes me happy.”
Javed Akhtar attributes the upbringing of his children to Honey Irani
When the interviewer probed Javed about raising children who respect their parents without instilling fear, he attributed much of the success to Honey. He remarked, “The majority of the credit goes to Honey; she was instrumental in their upbringing. When Honey and I separated, Zoya was around 11, and Farhan was about 9 and a half—those were critical years for their development.” Javed mentioned that even though he stayed connected with Farhan and Zoya, they primarily resided with Honey, who played a significant role in their growth.
“Honey ensured they understood their boundaries, freedoms, and the values they should embrace and reject. Her contributions to their development as individuals are substantial,” Javed stated.
However, Javed humorously mentioned that he would take some credit for encouraging their love for reading. “I used to read extensively, far more than I do now. Children often emulate their parents, and somehow this reading habit has taken root in them. Today, I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that they read more than I do.”
