Aryna Sabalenka has responded to claims that her off-court activities have interfered with her preparation for the US Open. The world number one expressed her frustration towards a reporter’s inquiry regarding her involvement in “parties and fun” following her straightforward victory over Polina Iatcenko, winning 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday (AEST).
After previously facing similar questions after her first-round match, the double defending champion dismissed the notion that her engagements outside of tennis had detracted from her training. “You guys are, like, a joke. Parties, fun… why would you even say that? What kind of question is that?” Sabalenka remarked.
In her remarks, she emphasized that her appearances with various brands should not be misconstrued as signs of neglecting her practice. Addressing her performance against Iatcenko, the four-time Grand Slam champion expressed satisfaction with her focus and level of play at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I’ve been working really hard, but I feel like I’m moving away from trying to be perfect on court,” she noted. “I understand that perfection is unattainable, and I’m focused on utilizing my current abilities.”
As Sabalenka strives for a third consecutive title in New York, she is also looking to enhance her performance after not securing a title since her victory at the Miami Open in March. “I think I struggled a little bit in the middle of the season. I’m not here to defend myself or explain the circumstances, but I’m content with my current level,” the 28-year-old stated.
She added, “Mentally, I feel significantly stronger than I did earlier in the season, and physically, I’m also feeling robust. I believe I’m back to my level of play, and my goal is to maintain the right focus for each match.”
