Two innocent individuals, a tradie and a university student, have tragically lost their lives amidst Sydney’s escalating gang violence, which has increasingly involved the targeting of bystanders and individuals mistaken for criminals. Neither victim had ties to organized crime, yet both became casualties in this ongoing conflict.
Law enforcement officials have attributed these violent acts to inexperienced teenagers hired by international criminal organizations, willing to commit murder for monetary gains. Since 2021, authorities have reported that at least eight individuals have been killed due to mistaken identity, and when including those targeted because of their connections to gang members or as innocent bystanders, the number rises to thirteen.

1. Joshua Macdonald, September 2026
In the early afternoon, Joshua Macdonald parked his work vehicle in the driveway of a home in Merrylands West. Alongside him were another man and two children in the front yard when a stolen grey Audi approached, and gunmen opened fire, resulting in Mr. Macdonald’s death. The 40-year-old, who co-owned an electrical business, had just celebrated his birthday. His aunt, Darlene, expressed profound sorrow, stating, “He was a wonderful man with a bright future ahead of him, which has now been taken away.” Authorities believe the intended target had connections to the Alameddine crime group but did not reside at that location. CCTV footage has captured the gunfire and the fleeing vehicle.
2. Marco Tapia, September 2026
Biomedical engineering student Marco Tapia was asleep at his Glen Alpine home when intruders broke in and shot him. His parents were also present during the horrifying incident. At just 23 years old and in his third year at the University of Technology Sydney, he was a dedicated volunteer and martial arts enthusiast. Following the tragedy, a member of the ‘Coconut Cartel’ gang remarked on social media that the assailants had “popped the wrong person” and targeted the incorrect residence. Police are investigating a violent feud between the Coconut Cartel and the rival Alameddine group as a contributing factor to the unrest.
3. Chris Baghsarian, February 2026
Eighty-five-year-old Chris Baghsarian was abducted from his North Ryde home and taken to a Dural location identified by law enforcement as a gang stronghold. After an 11-day search, his remains were discovered near a golf course in Pitt Town. Investigators believe a relative of businessman Dimitri Stepanyan was the actual target, with Mr. Baghsarian being mistakenly taken. A dozen individuals have been charged in connection with his death, including a teenager.
4. Gilbert Shino, August 2025
Gilbert Shino, 39, was shot outside a busy Sydney pub while walking with a friend allegedly affiliated with an Assyrian crime group. The two had just attended an Ultimate Fighting Championship event when gunmen in a Ford Mustang opened fire, resulting in Mr. Shino’s death while his friend survived. Witnesses recalled hearing bullets whiz past and described the chaos as patrons sought cover.
5. Luke Manassa, June 2025
In a case of mistaken identity, 21-year-old Luke Manassa was fatally stabbed while visiting a residence known to authorities. Police reported that masked assailants attacked him with machetes, and three teenagers have been charged with the crime. Authorities believe the attack was intended for someone else, and Mr. Manassa had been a beloved member of his local community, balancing university studies and work in his family’s construction business.
6. John Versace, May 2025
John Versace, a 23-year-old tradesman, was shot and killed in the driveway of his family’s home, with the assailants targeting the wrong address. Having just arrived home, Mr. Versace was shot ten times in what police characterized as a brutal assassination. In the aftermath, his family could be heard questioning the motive behind the attack. Police indicated that Mr. Versace was an upstanding young man who was working hard to build a future. His death spurred the establishment of Taskforce Falcon, a police unit dedicated to investigating a series of shootings in Sydney.
7. Thi Kim Tran, April 2025
Thi Kim Tran, a mother from Bankstown, was kidnapped at gunpoint in front of her child and later found dead inside a burnt car. Authorities alleged that her husband had crossed a drug syndicate based in Victoria, leading to her abduction. The criminals initially attempted to lure her husband out by sending photos of his kidnapped wife, but when they could not reach him, they tragically murdered her. An eight-year-old boy in the house was also attacked during the incident.
