On Wednesday afternoon, a shooting incident at a high-rise apartment complex in downtown Minneapolis resulted in the deaths of two individuals, while the suspected gunman was also found deceased, according to local officials.
One of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the other passed away shortly after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, as confirmed by a hospital representative.
The incident occurred on one of the upper floors of the apartment building, with city officials reporting the sound of gunfire. Footage shared on social media depicted police officers directing their weapons upward toward the apartment complex near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Following multiple 911 calls, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene around 4:39 PM. They pursued the sound of gunfire and encountered a “haze” that obstructed their visibility, as stated by authorities.
During the confrontation, two police officers sustained injuries; one suffered a non-life-threatening leg injury, while the other required surgery for their wounds.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed by authorities.
Julius Bailey, a resident who was outside his apartment at the time, recounted hearing gunshots and seeing a man he recognized from the building brandishing a firearm. He described hearing a woman screaming and immediately fled the area, estimating that he heard eight shots fired.
Bailey noted that he was familiar with the armed individual, who had a reputation for displaying his weapon, and mentioned that he had attempted to steer clear of him since moving in last June. “I could tell he was trouble,” Bailey remarked.
Another resident, Chris Miller, reported hearing a rapid series of gunshots and quickly sought refuge outside. He expressed concern that he recognized the shooter, recalling that he had seen someone with a handgun in the hallway earlier that week and had reported this to the building management.
The Minneapolis Police Department, along with Mayor Jacob Frey, urged the public to avoid the densely populated Loring Park area in the aftermath of the shooting.
In a statement, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts to ensure the safety of residents in downtown Minneapolis. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders,” he added.
The FBI has also mobilized its resources to support local law enforcement, as indicated by Director Kash Patel in a post on X.
