Chris Wright, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, has refuted allegations that the United States is trying to seize significant amounts of Venezuelan oil, amidst increasing backlash regarding Donald Trump’s energy agreement with the interim leaders of Venezuela.
When a CNBC reporter inquired whether the U.S. was involved in a coercive effort to appropriate Venezuelan oil in contravention of the nation’s constitution, Wright emphatically responded, “Absolutely not.”
Wright arrived in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, on Tuesday evening, just days after Trump heralded what he described as “the biggest oil deal in world history.”
“We are witnessing a truly historic shift in both Venezuela and the dynamics between Venezuela and the U.S.,” Wright asserted regarding the agreement, which Trump claims will grant the U.S. access to 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil. “This is President Trump’s ambitious strategy to substitute conflict with commerce,” he added.
The White House has stated that this deal will bolster U.S. “energy dominance for the next century” and aims to “eliminate foreign malign influence from our region” by preventing China and Russia from accessing Venezuela’s oilfields, which hold the largest proven oil reserves globally. Nevertheless, the arrangement has drawn criticism from various political factions.
The editorial board of The Wall Street Journal remarked that Trump’s agreement with Venezuela’s unelected interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, resembles a scene from a classic film where American businessmen negotiate with a foreign dictator.
The publication criticized the U.S. government for seemingly aligning itself with a foreign autocrat and her associated business interests, specifically referencing Alejandro Betancourt, the Venezuelan businessman central to the deal.
Economist Francisco Rodríguez expressed to Democracy Now that it is evident this agreement would not have been made by any legitimate Venezuelan government without the country being under invasion or its leaders being threatened. “We have transitioned from gunboat diplomacy to gunpoint diplomacy,” he stated.
Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of interim president on January 5, shortly after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured by U.S. special forces during a midnight operation in Caracas. Trump cautioned Rodríguez, who had served as Maduro’s vice-president, that she could face dire consequences if she did not comply with U.S. demands.
In the wake of Maduro’s capture, Rodríguez has made a series of unprecedented concessions to U.S. officials, who the Chavismo political movement had previously vilified as imperialists seeking to exploit Venezuela’s resources.
On Saturday, Rodríguez proclaimed that the oil agreement would provide “endless” advantages and generate over $209 billion in revenue, which could be allocated to enhance healthcare and education. “We are focused on the future of Venezuela,” she stated in a televised address to the nation.
The deal has significantly undermined Venezuela’s political opposition, who fear that Trump will not advocate for a democratic transition or new presidential elections due to his financial interests with Rodríguez.
“This is a maneuver between the Trump administration and Delcy and her associates,” lamented one opposition figure following the announcement of the agreement.
During a signing ceremony at the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas on Wednesday, Rodríguez expressed gratitude to the Trump administration for its involvement in what she termed a “win-win deal.” She declared, “I am optimistic about the future of Venezuela. What we are initiating today symbolizes the future and hope for the people of Venezuela.”
