According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a Russian drone has struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in Kyiv. This incident represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, as government facilities in Ukraine have rarely been targeted by drone or missile attacks throughout the protracted war with Russia.
The attack, which took place on Friday, resulted in injuries to at least seven individuals, as reported by Kyiv’s mayor. The city witnessed heavy black smoke rising from the area following the drone strike, marking the tenth consecutive day of Russian aerial assaults on the capital.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of the SBU in Ukraine’s military operations, highlighting its role in executing impactful strikes to undermine Russia’s military capabilities and energy infrastructure. He noted that the drone was specifically aimed at the office of the head of the SBU.
Details regarding the injury status of SBU personnel remain unclear. In response to the attack, Zelenskyy has instructed his military to prepare a “tangible” retaliation that corresponds with the nature of the Russian strike.
Emergency services and ambulances quickly responded to the scene, which is located near the historic Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Additionally, a local bakery, Zavertailo, reported damage to its building opposite the SBU headquarters due to the explosion.
Witnesses recounted their shock, with one woman expressing her surprise at the sudden blast while she had stepped out to buy cigarettes. The ongoing drone strikes have kept Kyiv on edge, with another incident reported earlier in the week involving a university in the city center.
Oleh, a 33-year-old observer of the situation, expressed a grim outlook, suggesting that residents might become desensitized to the attacks, noting that the violence could escalate further in both Kyiv and Moscow.
In light of the attack on the SBU, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on international allies to increase pressure on Moscow. He described the drone strike as a significant escalation that necessitates strong responses from the global community. Sybiha also highlighted that this act of aggression from Russia comes amid a renewed diplomatic push for peace, underscoring Moscow’s apparent dismissal of negotiation efforts.
The SBU is a crucial agency within Ukraine, known for its clandestine operations against Russian targets, including notable actions like the bombing of a bridge to Crimea in 2022 and a 2025 drone operation, dubbed Spiderweb, which targeted Russian strategic bombers. The agency is also often associated with covert operations aimed at high-ranking Russian military figures, which Russia has condemned as acts of terrorism.
