This match was a significant moment for Carlton, likely marking the point where they began to genuinely believe in their potential for greatness in 2026.
During round 12, Carlton’s captain Patrick Cripps emerged as the standout performer, making a spectacular mark in a crowded pack and scoring the decisive goal in the final moments, which secured a thrilling four-point victory for the Blues. That evening showcased the impressive synergy between Cripps, Walsh, and Smith, a trio that has propelled the Blues into the finals.
Chris Scott, the seasoned coach of Geelong, has undoubtedly studied that game closely and is unlikely to be caught off guard again. If tonight’s match can match that level of excitement, fans are in for an exhilarating experience.
The victors of this clash will be heading west, as Fremantle, having been defeated by Hawthorn last night, awaits either Geelong or Carlton in a semifinal set to take place next Friday.
Looking ahead, the next potential challenge could be a preliminary final against either Sydney or Brisbane, but it is premature to focus on that just yet.
Geelong finished fifth at the conclusion of the home and away season after a robust yet unremarkable campaign. Historically, Chris Scott’s team is a regular fixture in the top four, but this season they found themselves just outside that coveted position.
However, with several key players returning, the team is optimistic about their chances for a premiership run. If experience in finals holds any weight—and it undoubtedly does—Geelong is among the most well-prepared teams this year.
Meanwhile, Blues supporters spent the initial part of the season eyeing the draft pool and envisioning a brighter future. Few would have anticipated how close that promising future truly was.
After Michael Voss was dismissed, Josh Fraser took over, leading to an impressive turnaround for the Blues. This young and dynamic team began dominating their opponents, transforming what once seemed impossible into a newfound reality.
They advanced to the wildcard weekend, where they eliminated Melbourne. Next up is Geelong, a team that now plays without fear.
Both teams have confirmed their lineups without any last-minute changes.
There were notable omissions when Geelong announced their squad, with Sam De Koning, Jhye Clark, and Jack Martin not included. They have been replaced by Max Holmes, Oliver Wiltshire, and Mark Blicavs, who are solid additions.
The Blues have made one change, with Wade Derksen stepping in for the injured Nick Haynes.
