An American Airlines flight traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted to Baltimore late Thursday evening due to disturbances caused by a passenger, as confirmed by the airline based in Fort Worth on Friday.
Footage acquired by TMZ reveals several crew members and fellow passengers attempting to subdue the individual using duct tape. An image from inside the aircraft depicts the man seated in first class, bound with multiple strips of tape around his wrists, body, and head.
According to witnesses cited by TMZ, the man appeared to be intoxicated and began shouting at a fellow traveler. An attempt by a flight attendant to defuse the situation was met with the passenger allegedly using a racial slur and making derogatory comments. Witnesses described how he then escalated to violent behavior, leading the crew to restrain him and redirect the flight, as reported by TMZ.
Once law enforcement intervened and removed the individual from the aircraft, the flight proceeded to Newark.
In a statement, American Airlines emphasized, “The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority, and we do not tolerate violence. We express our gratitude to our team members for their professionalism and to our customers for their understanding.”
The FBI, in a statement to CBS News, confirmed that the passenger is currently in custody on state charges, while investigations are ongoing.
“The FBI is in the process of conducting interviews to ascertain the facts and will coordinate with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to assess the possibility of federal charges,” the statement indicated.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect.
