Brydon Carse has been excluded from England’s white-ball teams set to compete against Sri Lanka at the season’s conclusion and has been advised to “address the issues” stemming from an incident in which he was detained by police outside a Derby bar last month.
The 31-year-old cricketer is under investigation by the Cricket Regulator following the late-night event in August, which resulted in his removal from England’s squad for the ongoing Test series against Pakistan. Derbyshire police are also probing an alleged assault connected to that night, although Carse’s involvement remains unclear.
Currently, Carse is eligible for selection, yet he has been omitted from the Twenty20 and one-day international matches against Sri Lanka, beginning on September 15 in Southampton. Henry Crocombe, an uncapped fast bowler who recently achieved back-to-back hat-tricks for Sussex, has been named as Carse’s replacement in the ODI lineup.
An official spokesperson for England stated, “In light of recent occurrences, we believe it is crucial for [Carse] to work through the issues related to the Derby incident and take the necessary time for a thorough reset. This decision does not assume the outcome of any ongoing investigation.”
Despite being a close associate of white-ball captain Harry Brook and holding a central contract, it appears that Carse has fallen out of favor with the England management as they aim to reshape the image and culture within the men’s national teams. Joe Root, the Test captain, has previously urged his teammates to act as “role models.”
Additionally, Jacob Bethell will also miss the upcoming matches against Sri Lanka due to recent knee surgery, which has sidelined him since mid-July. He is not expected to return to fitness until the limited-overs tour of Australia in November, leading to Aneurin Donald of Derbyshire receiving his first call-up for T20 internationals.
If selected, Donald would be the first player from Glamorgan to represent England since Simon Jones during the 2005 Ashes, despite having switched counties. The 29-year-old scored 489 runs in this year’s T20 Blast at an impressive strike rate of 230 and excelled in the Hundred for the runners-up, Trent Rockets.
Before focusing on the upcoming matches against Sri Lanka, England must first complete the third Test against Pakistan. The tourists are now under the leadership of interim head coach Mike Hesson, following the dismissal of Sarfaraz Ahmed after the team fell 2-0 behind at Lord’s last Sunday, which also led to the removal of seven members from Pakistan’s touring squad.
Hesson, who had traveled to the UK primarily for an official engagement with King Charles, described the transition as “challenging.” After conducting individual discussions with the remaining squad members and training indoors at Edgbaston due to inclement weather, he expressed optimism about a fresh beginning. Three of the seven new arrivals were still expected to reach the UK on Friday.
Regarding the players who were dropped, Hesson explained that three of them—Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammed Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha—were informed that their tour had concluded immediately after the defeat at Lord’s. Hesson noted that he was not involved in the decision made by high-performance director Aaqib Javed and could not provide specific reasons for the changes.
England’s T20 squad consists of 16 players, including Harry Brook (Yorkshire – captain), Jofra Archer (Sussex), and Jos Buttler (Lancashire), among others. The ODI squad, also comprising 16 players, features the same captain with additional names such as Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) and Henry Crocombe (Sussex).
The schedule for the T20 matches is as follows: the first match will take place on September 15 at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, followed by the second on September 17 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, and the third on September 19 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. The ODI series will commence with the first match on September 22 at Banks Homes Riverside in Chester-le-Street.
For Hesson, stepping into the role of Test coach meant evaluating the team’s deficiencies and determining the necessary composition for the matches in Birmingham, which resulted in further adjustments to the touring party. He emphasized the importance of forming a balanced squad that provides a variety of options, noting that Pakistan is renowned for its pace and unique spin bowling.
As part of the new squad, Babar Azam will lead the team, accompanied by several new additions, indicating a shift in strategy as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
