As West Bengal commemorates the centenary of the iconic actor Uttam Kumar, tributes have emerged from diverse sectors, including political figures, film personalities, and fans across various age groups. This celebration honors the legacy of the man affectionately referred to as Mahanayak, reflecting on his profound impact on the film industry.

For those in the Bengali cinema community, discussing Uttam Kumar signifies recognition of a monumental figure whose legacy continues to influence the field. Actress Rituparna Sengupta emphasized that Uttam Kumar remains a vital presence even in contemporary times. During the centenary festivities, she remarked, “The greatest actor deserves such recognition. A hundred years is significant, and I believe this celebration is well-deserved. We have provided our input to the government, and as a member of the core committee, I appreciate the openness to our suggestions.”

Actor Jeet expressed his delight over the way the centenary is being honored, highlighting the emotional bond that the people of Bengal share with the cinematic legend. “I am thrilled to witness the celebrations. Uttam Kumar was more than just an actor; he embodies the spirit of Bengal. It is wonderful to see a member of our community being celebrated in such a remarkable way,” he stated.

Sreemoyee Chattoraj Mullick, another actress, spoke about the compelling charisma that Uttam Kumar possessed both on-screen and in real life. “Words cannot fully capture his essence, as Uttam Kumar had an extraordinary aura. We are grateful to our Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, for honoring him,” she noted.

BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh remarked on Uttam Kumar’s lasting impact on Bengal’s cultural landscape. “For some individuals, their work is a form of devotion. Whether a teacher, doctor, lawyer, or actor like Uttam Kumar, his heart was always in his craft. This is perhaps why he continues to resonate with so many, even years after his passing. Just recently, even the Prime Minister acknowledged Uttam Kumar on social media in honor of his birth centenary. He remains alive in the hearts of many,” Ghosh said.

Actress Indrani Haldar noted that even younger generations continue to feel the influence of Uttam Kumar’s artistry. “He left us when we were still young, yet he remains a legendary figure. It is impressive how quickly this new government has begun such commendable initiatives within just three months of taking office,” she commented.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Gourab Chatterjee, Uttam Kumar’s grandson and fellow actor, shared his personal reflections. “To me, he is more than just a legend; he motivated me to pursue a career in this industry. While I appreciate the commemorative efforts, I personally prefer not to attend them. I believe my grandfather would have preferred to see me working on a film set rather than participating in events honoring him,” he expressed.

“Though I was born after his death, I feel a connection to him in some personality traits. From what I’ve learned from my family, he was calm and dedicated to his craft, which reflects in my own approach. The extraordinary synergy of talented writers, directors, and musicians during his time was crucial to his success, and such a unique collaboration has not been replicated since,” Chatterjee added.

He further reflected on the changes in the film industry, lamenting the loss of distinct cultural elements. “We long for that era, which seems irretrievable now. Globalization has blurred our cultural identity, and as we embrace international cinema, local films have adapted to those influences,” he stated.

The discourse surrounding Uttam Kumar transcends Bengal, as Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recounted the actor’s widespread admiration beyond state lines. He mentioned the strong friendship between Uttam Kumar and Assam’s cultural icon, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. “Some legends are cherished beyond borders, while others quietly reside in our memories. During my youth, we were all captivated by Uttam Kumar’s charm on-screen. On this centenary, I pay homage to this towering figure in Indian cinema. His relationship with Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is a significant chapter in our cultural heritage,” Sarma remarked.

Sarma also highlighted a cinematic connection between Uttam Kumar and Assam, recalling their collaboration in the film Hotel Snow Fox. “Biju Phukan, the beloved hero of Assamese cinema, was to Assam what Uttam Kumar was to Bengal. As both states celebrate their respective legends, it serves as a reminder of how great artists have enriched their worlds through their creativity and friendships, leaving a legacy that spans across generations and boundaries,” he concluded.

West Bengal’s Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay also took to social media to honor Uttam Kumar on his 100th birth anniversary, recognizing his timeless performances and unmatched contributions to cinema.
