The United States is characterized by a diverse range of economies rather than a singular economic landscape.

Examining the disparities in wage increases across different cities reveals notable variations. According to ADP Pay Insights, workers nationwide experienced a 4.7% increase in gross earnings in August compared to the previous year, with a base pay rise averaging 3.2%.

However, in certain metropolitan areas, wage growth significantly outpaced inflation, driven by several common factors: robust job creation, a scarcity of available workers, and elevated employee turnover rates, as indicated by data from the payroll processing firm.

Additionally, cities that host a higher concentration of manufacturing and financial services sectors tend to experience more substantial wage growth.

“A labor supply shortage, often stemming from an aging workforce or a mismatch in skills, can lead to increased wages,” noted Liv Wang, a lead data scientist at ADP, in an interview with CBS News.

As reported by the Department of Labor on Friday, wages nationwide in August rose at an annualized rate of 3.1%, marking the slowest growth since May 2021, despite robust payroll increases surpassing economists’ predictions. ADP’s data focuses on private-sector employment, while the government’s non-farm payroll statistics provide a more comprehensive view of the job market, encompassing government positions as well.
