A detective of Indian descent employed by the Metropolitan Police in London has been formally charged with five counts of sexual assault and is set to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, according to a statement from UK police.
Detective Sergeant Prakash Patel, who serves in the North West Command Unit of the Metropolitan Police, is accused of committing four offenses on December 3, 2024, with a fifth alleged incident occurring during the summer of that same year. The allegations involve four women known to Patel, and they are currently being supported by the police’s investigative team.
The Metropolitan Police stated, “DS Patel was charged on Friday, July 24, with five counts of sexual assault. It is alleged that one incident occurred on an unspecified date in the summer of 2024, while the other four incidents took place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.”
Authorities indicated that Patel was arrested in April of the previous year following an investigation initiated by the Central South Command Unit in collaboration with the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards. He was immediately suspended from his duties upon his arrest.
The case has been forwarded to the Crown Prosecution Service, which approved the charges last month.
On Thursday, the Met Police reiterated, “DS Patel was arrested on Thursday, April 24, 2025, after an investigation was launched by the Central South Command Unit, working in conjunction with the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards. He was suspended on the same day.”
