An eyewitness video has documented a Qantas flight, traveling from Queenstown, New Zealand, to Sydney, encountering a potential engine problem shortly after takeoff.

The incident occurred as flight QF122 took off from Queenstown, leading to a diversion due to flames reportedly visible from one side of the aircraft. A representative from Qantas confirmed the event, labeling it a “suspected engine issue” that necessitated the flight’s rerouting.

According to the airline’s spokesperson, the flight was redirected to Christchurch shortly after departing at approximately 3:30 PM, with an expected landing time at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport set for 4:50 PM. The airline assured that the pilots, well-trained in handling emergencies, managed the situation effectively, resulting in a safe landing.

Footage shared with ABC News shows what appears to be flames coming from the left engine of the Boeing aircraft. Despite the visible flames, Qantas stated that both engines were operational throughout the flight and that there were no shutdowns or failures reported.

Liam Aspinall, who was enjoying time with friends in Queenstown, witnessed the incident and described the scene, noting the flames and the loud noises reminiscent of gunfire. “I noticed flames appearing to come off the thing as it was approaching us from afar,” Aspinall recounted to ABC News.

In light of the unsettling experience, Qantas has provided assistance to the affected passengers, offering them accommodation and support in arranging alternative travel plans.
