The passing of former Member of Parliament Peter Katsambanis at the age of 60 has left a profound impact on the Liberal Party, where he was regarded as one of its most dedicated advocates.

With a notable career in both the Western Australian and Victorian parliaments, Mr. Katsambanis was a respected figure within the Greek Australian community. His wife, Karalee Katsambanis, expressed the family’s deep sorrow over his death, stating, “He was a remarkable man: loved, cherished, and respected by countless individuals.” In her heartfelt social media tribute, she reflected on their bond, saying, “As his wife, I have lost my soulmate and the love of my life, and I appreciate all the support we have received.” She also expressed gratitude to the heart transplant team at The Alfred Hospital for their care.

Mr. Katsambanis represented Western Australia’s parliament from 2013 to 2021, serving initially in the Legislative Council and later in the Legislative Assembly for the Hillarys constituency. This seat was historically a stronghold for the Liberal Party until he was unseated by Caitlin Collins during the Labor Party’s significant victory in the 2021 state elections. Throughout his tenure, he held various roles, including opposition spokesperson for police, road safety, justice, and industrial relations. His political journey also included a stint in the Victorian parliament from 1996 to 2002.

Simon Morgan, the state director of the Liberal Party in Western Australia, conveyed that Mr. Katsambanis would be deeply missed, stating, “He was a fierce and distinguished champion of the Liberal cause, both as a student and as a trusted advisor and parliamentarian in Victoria and Western Australia. Our party has lost a vital member, and we extend our sincere condolences to Karalee and Peter’s children during this difficult time.”

WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas highlighted Mr. Katsambanis’s remarkable contributions to the Liberal Party and public service across two states. He remarked, “Peter always prioritized service; he was an exceptionally dedicated representative and held a unique place in Australian politics, having served in both chambers of the Western Australian parliament and in the Victorian parliament.” He added that Mr. Katsambanis would be greatly missed by his peers, extending heartfelt condolences to the family.

Additionally, Mr. Zempilas recognized Mr. Katsambanis’s significant contributions to the Greek Australian community, noting his role as the president of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association from 2017 to 2021 and as vice-president of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia.

Details regarding the funeral, which will take place in Melbourne, will be provided by the family in the coming days.
