This weekend, envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, representing President Trump, are set to visit Moscow and Kyiv with a new initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During a press briefing on Friday, President Trump revealed that he dispatched the envoys to propose a plan for peace in light of the war that erupted in 2022 following Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine.
“We have a plan for peace,” Trump stated. “I have sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are excellent negotiators. They have a proven track record, and we are hopeful about their mission to see if we can achieve a resolution,” he added.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced via social media that he is preparing to welcome Witkoff and Kushner on Sunday. He committed to refraining from any military actions against Russia during their visit.
“Our aim is to ensure that the discussions with the U.S. delegation are as productive and meaningful as possible. We must explore genuine avenues to bring this war to a conclusion,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
This trip will be significant as it marks the first visit of Witkoff and Kushner to Ukraine since Trump’s return to the presidency, where he has pledged to tackle the conflict. In December 2025, the two met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a five-hour meeting that was deemed “constructive” by a Russian official, although it did not yield a significant breakthrough.
In September 2025, Trump expressed to CBS News his dedication to facilitating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, asserting, “I’m working on it with both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. Something will occur, but they’re not quite ready yet. However, something will happen.”
Despite these efforts, attempts at peace have seemingly stalled following the U.S. military action against Iran in February, which has led to an ongoing conflict lasting over six months.
The renewed diplomatic initiative occurs amid escalating exchanges of missile and drone strikes between Russia and Ukraine.
Just prior to Trump’s announcement, a Russian drone reportedly targeted the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in central Kyiv, according to Zelenskyy. This strike, aimed at the acting chief’s office, marked the first assault on the agency’s headquarters since the onset of the invasion.
