The Women’s Asia Cup, now in its tenth edition, has received a mixed reception. The stark disparity between the strongest and weakest teams in the tournament has become increasingly evident. So far, no underdog has posed a significant challenge to the dominant teams. While records have been shattered, including several by Smriti Mandhana, the lack of spectators has diminished the excitement surrounding these achievements.

Amidst this backdrop, the tournament’s most anticipated clash is set to occur: India versus Pakistan.

An analysis of past performances suggests that this match may not be competitive. Over the last decade, Pakistan has secured only one victory against India across all formats, with a T20I win rate of just 17.65%. Pakistan has yet to claim a title in the Asia Cup, a distinction held by Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka is the reigning champion.

Nevertheless, the intensity of the rivalry often overshadows statistical realities. This was evident as Indian head coach Amol Muzumdar was promptly questioned about whether his players would shake hands with their Pakistani opponents upon arriving in Dubai. Similarly, after Muneeba Ali’s impressive half-century against Thailand, six out of ten questions in her post-match interview focused on the upcoming match against India.

The players themselves are fully aware of the stakes. On the eve of the match, all-rounder Deepti Sharma confidently asserted India’s dominance. “Whether in the Asia Cup or other tournaments, we’ve consistently been ahead of them,” she remarked.

Deepti has also excelled with the ball, having taken six wickets in two matches against lower-ranked teams Thailand and Hong Kong, a performance that nearly matches her runs conceded.

Successful teams often utilize spinners in pairs, but India’s strategy involves a trio. Sree Charani has recorded figures of 4 for 26, while Prema Rawat, who had only participated in one international match prior to this tournament, has contributed two wickets with an impressive economy of 3.28.

However, India’s batting performance reveals a reliance on their opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who have accounted for a substantial 66.8% of the team’s runs in the tournament thus far.

Pakistan’s experience mirrors this trend, having surpassed the 130-run mark only twice in their last ten T20Is, and managing just 111/9 against Thailand. Despite this, they have secured 59 wickets at an average of 21.35 during the same period. In the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan lost all matches except one against the Netherlands, although captain Fatima Sana emerged as the joint second-highest wicket-taker. In contrast, leading run-scorer Muneeba ranked significantly lower on the leaderboard at 29th place.

Whether Pakistan possesses the necessary skills and tactics to perform better will soon be revealed. Historical data does not provide much optimism, as the last five meetings between the teams have seen little competition. Nonetheless, the proximity of the nations, the clash of blue against green, and the enduring India-Pakistan rivalry could lead to an electrifying encounter.

If not in the cricketing sense, then certainly in terms of temperature—Dubai’s ‘real feel’ is anticipated to peak at 46°C on Saturday.

The India-Pakistan match will be broadcast live at 8 PM on the Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV.
