Gladys, an impressive Atlantic giant pumpkin, was planted on April 19 and pollinated on June 30. Weighing in at approximately 544 kilograms (1,200 pounds), she certainly qualifies as a substantial specimen, comparable to the combined weight of six or seven average adults.

Her dimensions are remarkable, boasting a circumference of 4.3 meters (14 feet) and occupying an area of 600 square feet. The plant features a multitude of leaves along with a complex system of secondary vines and roots. While some may find her appearance somewhat off-putting, visuals can provide a better sense of her uniqueness.

The pumpkin was cultivated by Ben White, an Essex-based heating engineer, rather than the Arsenal football player of the same name. White describes himself as an amateur gardener and has dubbed himself a “Vegetable Tamer” on his social media platforms.

White nurtured Gladys in an 18-meter polytunnel, giving her consistent care with water and nutrients, and ensuring a comfortable environment through the use of a fan. He shared that his endeavor goes beyond simply producing a large pumpkin; it’s about exploring the plant’s genetic potential. He humorously mentioned that he feels a paternal bond with Gladys.

White asserts that there are no magical elements involved in the pumpkin’s growth. With a decade of experience in cultivating large pumpkins and a previous entry at the 2021 Chelsea Flower Show, he noted that at her peak, Gladys was gaining over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) each night.

While one might wonder if her name is inspired by her nocturnal growth or the presence of seeds, the reasoning remains unclear. What is evident, however, is that she has surpassed her original weight goal of 1,000 pounds.

Despite her impressive size, Gladys does not hold the record for the largest pumpkin. That title belongs to twin brothers Stuart and Ian Paton from Lymington in Hampshire, who set a new world record last October with a pumpkin weighing 1,278 kilograms and measuring 6.4 meters in circumference after years of cultivating larger specimens.

In terms of the largest vegetables, pumpkins are technically classified as fruit in horticulture, despite their culinary use as vegetables. Notably, the largest recorded vegetables include a 62.7-kilogram cabbage from Scott Robb in Alaska, a 27-kilogram cauliflower by Peter Glazebrook in Nottinghamshire, and an impressive 9-kilogram onion grown by Gareth Griffin in Guernsey.

However, these comparisons pale in significance next to Gladys. While one might assume she is being prepared for Halloween, White has different plans. He intends to enter her into the Canna UK National Giant Vegetables Championship at the end of the month.

Although Gladys is unlikely to surpass the Paton brothers’ world record by that time, White aims to showcase her to raise funds for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. He emphasizes that this endeavor adds a meaningful purpose beyond merely attempting to grow an enormous pumpkin, recalling that his previous giant pumpkins, Gloria and Greta, helped raise £1,100 for the community.

In conclusion, it’s certainly a thrilling endeavor. One can’t help but cheer, “Smashing!” while leaving the questions of motive aside.
