Paddy Payne Sr., a distinguished figure in the Australian horse racing community and the patriarch of the renowned Payne family, has passed away at the age of 90.
He was the father of Michelle Payne, who made history as the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup, and the husband of the late Mary Payne, with whom he shared ten children.
In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Michelle honored her father, stating, “RIP Dad. You finally get to go and see Mum again.”
Racing Victoria released a statement recognizing the legacy of the “legendary Ballarat horseman.” The organization noted, “Paddy was the head of the Payne family, which has become one of the most well-known names in Australian racing.”
Aaron Morrison, Chief Executive of Racing Victoria, remarked, “Paddy was the matriarch of a family that has significantly contributed to Australian racing, creating countless cherished memories.” He added, “Though Paddy has left us, his impact on the sport will endure, and his legacy will continue.”
Mary Payne tragically passed away in a car accident in 1986, leaving Paddy to care for their children, including infant Michelle, who was just six months old at the time.
Another daughter, Brigid, who had a career as a jockey, died from a heart attack in 2007.
In a 2015 interview with ABC, Payne reflected on his family’s journey, saying, “We’ve experienced both significant successes and challenges.” He expressed pride in their close-knit relationships, stating, “We’re a close family, and my children get along well, which is wonderful for me to witness.”
