FINANCIAL CHRONICLE — The government of Sri Lanka has decided to issue new tenders for the renovation of synthetic running tracks at the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex. This decision follows the submission of a bid by the only qualified contractor, which was substantially higher than the initial cost estimates.
The project involves the resurfacing of various synthetic tracks, specifically the 400-meter, 200-meter, and 80-meter tracks, managed by the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority. The total projected cost for this undertaking is approximately 1.06 billion rupees.
The Cabinet had previously approved this project in October 2025 and again in March 2026, leading to the initiation of the tender process in accordance with the International Competitive Bidding guidelines.
Minister Vijitha Herath reported that three bids were submitted for the project; however, upon review, the only qualified bid came in at 70 percent above the original budgeted cost. As a result, the High-Level Procurement Committee has recommended canceling the initial round of procurement.
In light of this recommendation, the Cabinet of Ministers has endorsed the proposal put forth by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports to issue new tenders and find an appropriate contractor for the returfing project.
