On Tuesday, the United Kingdom faced significant disruption as over 600 flights were canceled due to a technical malfunction in the air traffic control system, according to Flightradar24, a flight tracking service. British airports experienced widespread delays and cancellations after the National Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) encountered this technical issue.

Air traffic management officials indicated that the inability for planes to take off safely resulted in severe delays for departures. Approximately two hours into the ongoing disruptions, NATS announced that engineers had pinpointed and resolved the issue; however, the timeline for restoring normal operations remained uncertain, as reported by The Independent.

A representative from NATS expressed regret over the delays that passengers would face and encouraged travelers to verify their flight status with their respective airlines.

In a communication posted on social media, Heathrow Airport acknowledged the technical problems affecting departing flights across UK airports and confirmed that arriving flights were not impacted. The airport stated that it was collaborating closely with NATS to expedite a resolution and promised to provide updates as they became available.

Heathrow’s social media post included an apology for the inconvenience caused and urged passengers to consult their airlines for the latest information regarding their flights.

According to a report from the BBC, Heathrow Airport had reached capacity for incoming flights due to the lack of departures, compounding the situation. By 5 PM UTC, a total of 625 flights had been canceled across UK airports as a result of the earlier technical difficulties at NATS’ Shanwick air traffic control facility.

The cancellations included significant numbers from various airlines, with easyJet canceling 218 flights, British Airways 132, Ryanair 41, KLM 37, and Eurowings 22, as noted by Flightradar24.
