Warren Pickering, the leader of One Nation in Victoria, has publicly acknowledged his past involvement with drugs during his youth.

Mr. Pickering spoke to the media after his ex-partner revealed to The Australian that they had used illegal substances together around 20 years ago.

At 43 years old, Pickering is contesting for the Pakenham seat in the upcoming Victorian election.

Following revelations from The Australian, Pickering confirmed his history with drugs. He stated that in his twenties, he experimented with substances such as speed, ecstasy, and marijuana.

“I would never classify myself as a drug addict,” he clarified. “I did use drugs when I was younger, and I am not proud of that period.”

He emphasized that he ceased using illicit drugs prior to enlisting in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at age 28, and he disclosed his drug history during his application process.

Expressing remorse, Pickering reflected on his past mistakes, particularly regarding his children. “The errors I made in my twenties affected many people, including myself and those I cared about. I will carry that burden for the rest of my life,” he admitted. “I wish I could have provided a better environment for my kids. I did the best I could with the resources I had at the time.”

Additionally, Pickering acknowledged that he had lost his driver’s license due to drink driving offenses at ages 18 and 20, and again a decade later, but he noted that he has never been incarcerated.

He confirmed that One Nation is supporting him through this situation and that he has consulted with legal advisors regarding the reports.

Before Mr. Pickering’s address, James Ashby, One Nation’s chief of staff, commented on a handwritten note and a potential issue involving a home purchase grant linked to Pickering that was mentioned in the newspaper. Ashby stated that Mr. Pickering is prepared to take responsibility for the grant matter, which he only became aware of after it was highlighted by the media.

“He understands the significance of acknowledging his past and, equally important, offering hope to others in similar situations,” Ashby remarked. “His experiences are not uncommon and illustrate how a determined individual can turn their life around.”

Prior to the event, One Nation barred reporters from the ABC and The Guardian from entering the press conference venue.

Last month, Pickering was appointed as the Victorian leader for One Nation and is set to run for election in Pakenham in November. Senator Pauline Hanson has publicly expressed her support for him.

Meanwhile, Labor has indicated that polling indicates Victoria may see the emergence of Australia’s first Liberal-One Nation government following the election in November, although the Liberal party has denied any intentions of forming an alliance with One Nation.
