During this year’s Burning Man festival, three individuals lost their lives, marking a significant rise in fatalities compared to the average annual count associated with this event, which typically attracts tens of thousands of participants to create a temporary community in the harsh Nevada desert.

This uptick in deaths coincides with reports indicating a shift in the demographic of festival-goers, with a noted increase in the average age of attendees; fewer individuals in their twenties are present, while more participants are now in their forties and fifties.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen informed the Reno Gazette-Journal, “While we usually experience about one death each year at this event, we have already recorded two fatalities on-site this year, and I have been informed of a third individual who passed away while being transported to a Reno hospital.”

The festival, which has seen attendance figures soar to over 70,000 in recent years, concluded on September 7. Established in 1986 in San Francisco as a countercultural initiative where local artists created effigies to be burned, Burning Man has gradually transformed into a popular gathering for the global technology elite.

According to census data from Black Rock City, the proportion of attendees in their twenties has decreased from approximately 30% in 2014 to just 10% in 2025, while the number of participants aged 40 to 50 has increased.

The first reported death this year involved a male in his “mid-50s,” followed by a 60-year-old man, as noted by the San Francisco Chronicle. The sheriff’s office confirmed that there were no indications of foul play in either of the first two fatalities, both occurring on the festival grounds in Black Rock City, located about 120 miles from Reno.

Last year, a 37-year-old man was discovered deceased in a pool of blood on the final day of the festival, a case authorities are treating as a homicide. This marked the first homicide at the festival in nearly 40 years, and the investigation remains unresolved, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The Burning Man Organization has not yet provided a comment regarding the three deaths reported this year.

The sheriff’s office reported that the first death was recorded on the evening of September 3 at Rampart, the festival’s temporary medical facility. A man was found on the street within the festival and received CPR for several minutes before being declared dead by a physician. The second fatality was reported on the afternoon of September 5, involving a man discovered deceased in a trailer he shared with his partner.

Further details regarding the circumstances of the deaths are expected to be released in six to eight weeks, following the completion of autopsies and toxicology analyses, as stated by the Pershing County sheriff’s office. Questions related to the third death have been directed to Washoe County, where the county medical examiner’s office has yet to respond to inquiries.
