The Kremlin has highlighted that Russia conducts 90% of its transactions with BRICS member nations using their respective national currencies. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, announced on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to meet on Friday, just prior to the BRICS leaders’ summit taking place in New Delhi on September 12-13.

During an online session with journalists from India, arranged by the Russian news outlet Sputnik India, Peskov remarked, “The two leaders maintain a very close personal relationship and are pragmatic in their approach. They are able to engage in open and constructive discussions about sensitive global issues as well as matters concerning our bilateral relations.”

Peskov characterized BRICS as a versatile group focused on policy, security, economic cooperation, and cultural and humanitarian exchanges. He stated, “As always, Modi and Putin will address the bilateral agenda, which encompasses a broad range of trade and economic cooperation. Many topics are not suitable for public discussion due to the presence of unfriendly nations attempting to hinder our collaborative efforts. Nonetheless, these matters are being addressed discreetly and constructively.” This statement hints at potential sanctions from Western countries affecting Indian businesses involved with Russia.

Regarding the BRICS statement on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, where there are tensions between the UAE and Iran, Peskov acknowledged their differing positions and the challenges in their bilateral relations. He expressed, “We sincerely wish for our good friends in those countries to overcome this difficult phase, and Russia stands ready to assist in normalizing their relationship if necessary. We advocate for security in the region and mutual trust, opposing aggressive actions while hoping for a resolution.”

Peskov also commented on how the tensions between the UAE and Iran could impact BRICS discussions, saying, “Certainly, these issues have a detrimental effect and complicate the drafting process. However, we have talented diplomats, as does the Indian presidency, and I am confident that the necessary language can be crafted to address the national interests of all parties involved.”

When asked about India’s potential involvement in resolving the situation, he responded, “We welcome any efforts from India to contribute to the resolution of the Ukraine conflict. We also recognize the willingness of former U.S. President Trump to assist in the peace process, and significant efforts are currently underway with American negotiators working diligently between Moscow and Kyiv. We are hopeful for a revival of negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.”

On the subject of sanctions against Russia, Peskov stated, “We reject any attempts to impose restrictions on international trade as illegal and unacceptable under international law. Such actions are unfair and threatening to other nations engaging in trade.”

Regarding the supply of Russian energy to India, he refrained from providing specific figures, citing understandable reasons, but noted that monthly records continue to be set.

In terms of Indian citizens serving in the Russian military, Peskov acknowledged that India had raised the issue, emphasizing that they are working to identify those individuals on the battlefield and facilitate their return home as soon as possible. He affirmed that there is ongoing close communication with Indian authorities on this matter.

Discussing defense relations with India, he expressed satisfaction with their technical and military collaboration, noting, “We possess excellent military equipment and are prepared to share it with our Indian partners. Our cooperation has evolved beyond mere sales to include joint production.” He added that military cooperation is a sensitive area, typically not discussed publicly.

Regarding delays in delivering the S-400 air defense system to India, he assured, “Russia is fully capable of meeting its commitments, and they will be honored.”

On the potential sale of the Sukhoi-57 fighter aircraft, he described it as an advanced machine among the best globally, confirming that discussions regarding its sale to India are ongoing. He noted that India is interested in production technologies, which will require further talks, acknowledging that nations generally prefer to retain control of new technology. He reiterated that, given the strong strategic partnership with India, they will explore options for technology sharing with Indian partners.
