LIV Golf has initiated bankruptcy proceedings in New Jersey, aiming to reorganize its operations with a $49.6 million bankruptcy loan from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. The Chapter 11 filing indicates that the organization faces liabilities ranging between $500 million and $1 billion, while its assets are estimated to be between $100 million and $500 million.

The company expressed that this bankruptcy process will facilitate a partnership with a new investor, BC Partners Advisors LP, and enable a shift toward a player-centric ownership structure. LIV Golf anticipates that BC Partners, along with other potential minority stakeholders, will contribute exit financing and support the restructuring of the company’s debt.

LIV Golf has been strategizing for its future since the PIF indicated in April that its continued investment in the league was not aligned with its broader objectives and that funding would be reduced after the 2026 season. According to the bankruptcy filing, PIF holds full ownership of LIV Golf.

Since its inception in 2022, the PIF has invested over $5 billion into LIV Golf, which has attracted high-profile talent from the PGA Tour using substantial signing bonuses. Notable players who have joined include Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Dustin Johnson. The filing also reveals that Rahm, DeChambeau, and Johnson are the league’s top three unsecured creditors, each owed more than $5 million.

Before the announcement of the Chapter 11 filing, Jon Rahm, during a press conference ahead of the Irish Open, reflected on the uncertain future of LIV Golf, stating, “Yes and no, it hasn’t really changed from my last interview in Indianapolis a few weeks ago. There are many variables at play, and time will reveal the outcomes. For those of us who joined LIV, I consider myself adept at navigating through uncertainties.”

LIV Golf aims to utilize the bankruptcy process to ensure the league’s sustainability while adopting an innovative ownership model focused on players. The organization aspires to emerge from bankruptcy by early 2027. Scott O’Neil, the CEO of LIV Golf, emphasized in a statement, “We have strong faith in LIV Golf’s future, the opportunities ahead, and the individuals who will help us achieve our goals.”

In August, the professional men’s golf league laid off a significant portion of its workforce as it sought to secure new funding.
