Lev Parikian offers a compelling account of the gannet population on Bass Rock and outlines the detrimental effects of avian influenza on their numbers (Country diary, 31 August). However, there is another pressing issue that places some advocates of renewable energy, myself included, in a challenging position: opposing the development of a wind farm.
The Berwick Bank project is set to become one of the largest offshore wind farms globally, situated just a few kilometers from Bass Rock. This proximity raises significant concerns, as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) estimates that over 4,000 seabirds will perish in its inaugural year, including gannets, puffins, and the vulnerable kittiwake.
While I am a proponent of wind energy, the chosen site for this wind farm poses a serious threat to wildlife and reflects a lack of foresight. Many individuals, including myself, are advocating for its relocation further offshore. I encourage others to support the cause for these seabirds by visiting stopberwickbank.co.uk.
